Authorities in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh, have detained Shaligram Garg, the younger sibling of Bageshwar Dham head priest Pandit Dhirendra Krishna Shastri, along with another individual, Ankit Mishra, in relation to a shooting incident. This development was confirmed by police on July 15, 2023. The arrests are part of an ongoing investigation into the case, which has drawn significant attention due to the involvement of a prominent local figure.

Case Background and Investigation

According to Additional Superintendent of Police Aditya Patle, the case has been registered under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Rajnagar police station. The police have identified a total of four suspects, which includes three named individuals and one who remains unidentified. Detective Patle stated that the shooting incident is believed to be linked to a dispute over land rights. He mentioned that the circumstances surrounding the incident are being closely examined.

Patle emphasized that, as part of the investigation, the police have secured the weapon that was used in the altercation. This weapon will undergo forensic analysis to gather further evidence. He reassured that legal procedures are being followed and that updates will be released as the inquiry progresses. The statement suggests that while initial observations indicate a land dispute, the complete picture will rely on the findings from the ongoing investigations.

In light of the arrests, Patle has highlighted the necessity for due legal proceedings. The police are focused on resolving the case methodically and ensuring that justice is served based on the evidence collected. This attention to detail underscores the authorities’ commitment to addressing the case thoroughly.

Statements from Dhirendra Krishna Shastri

Following the arrests, Pandit Dhirendra Krishna Shastri distanced himself from his younger brother Shaligram, stating that they have no connection and that he does not associate with his family. This announcement was made in response to media inquiries regarding Shaligram’s involvement in the case. Shastri reiterated that he had previously made his stance clear and has no ties with his estranged brother.

In a statement to the Press Agency of India, he expressed his desire for the justice system to proceed without influence and urged for the harshest penalties against those responsible for the incident. He noted the recurrent issues in Chhatarpur and expressed a wish to not be implicated in every matter concerning his family, emphasising that the legal system should address the situation appropriately.

Shastri’s comments reflect a commitment to ensuring that the responsible parties be held accountable. His statements have underscored the complex dynamics within family relationships, especially in the wake of criminal allegations. While the legal proceedings continue, Shastri has called for a clear separation between his public service and personal affiliations.
