PoJK Activist Amjad Ayub Mirza Urges UN Probe Into Alleged Crackdown On Rawalakot Rights Protesters

The CSR Journal Magazine

Political activist Amjad Ayub Mirza has called on the United Nations to intervene urgently in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), alleging a worsening humanitarian and political crisis following reported security operations against protesters in the region.

In a video statement issued from Scotland, Mirza expressed concern over reports of an alleged crackdown on demonstrators in Rawalakot, where residents had been protesting over economic, social and civil rights issues. He urged the international community to independently verify developments on the ground and ensure the protection of civilians.

The appeal comes amid heightened scrutiny of governance and human rights conditions in PoJK, where periodic protests have highlighted local grievances over economic hardship and political representation.

Activist Alleges Excessive Use Of Force

Citing information received from local sources, Mirza alleged that security operations involved personnel from the Pakistani Rangers, Punjab Police and military units.

According to the activist, the operations resulted in civilian casualties, including deaths and injuries among unarmed protesters. He further claimed that live ammunition had been used against demonstrators, creating what he described as an atmosphere of fear and intimidation across the region.

“The people of PoJK have the right to peaceful assembly. They have the right to raise their voices without fear of bullets, intimidation, or repression,” Mirza said in his statement.

The allegations have not been independently verified, and there was no immediate official response available to the claims mentioned by the activist.

Calls For International Fact-Finding Mission

Mirza urged the United Nations to dispatch an independent fact-finding mission to investigate the reported incidents and assess the situation on the ground.

He also called for international journalists, humanitarian observers and human rights organisations to be granted access to the region to conduct independent assessments.

According to Mirza, allegations of arbitrary detentions, intimidation and excessive use of force require urgent scrutiny by international bodies. He argued that an impartial investigation would help establish the facts surrounding the reported unrest and ensure accountability if violations occurred.

The activist further appealed for diplomatic engagement aimed at reducing tensions and encouraging dialogue between authorities and protesters.

Concerns Over Escalating Tensions

Mirza criticised Pakistan’s handling of the situation, claiming that the deployment of security forces had aggravated tensions rather than addressing public concerns.

He warned that the consequences could be serious if reports emerging from the region prove accurate and urged the global community not to ignore the situation.

“The world must not remain silent while civilians plead for protection,” he said.

The developments highlighted by Mirza have once again drawn attention to conditions in PoJK, where activists and rights groups have periodically raised concerns over governance, economic challenges and restrictions on civil liberties.

As calls for an independent inquiry grow, the focus is likely to remain on whether international organisations take further steps to examine the allegations and assess the situation in the region.
