Devendra Nath Mahto’s health has significantly worsened as the agitation for recruitment reforms in Jharkhand has reached its fifteenth day. Currently on an indefinite hunger strike at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in Ranchi, Mahto has reported severe physical challenges linked to his extended fast. In an interview, he revealed that medical assessments indicated low blood sugar and blood pressure, resulting in dehydration and organ strain.

On a limited diet consisting only of water and salt for the past fifteen days, the toll on his body has become apparent. He acknowledged the difficulty he faces in communication due to his deteriorating condition. Mahto’s commitment to the protest remains unyielding, despite the health risks he is encountering.

Students Demand Reforms from State Authorities

The student demonstrators continue to press for significant changes in the state’s recruitment process, specifically targeting the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). A noteworthy meeting occurred recently between a state government delegation and representatives from the protesting students. Mahto mentioned that, while he could not attend, he has been following their discussions closely.

According to Mahto, a delegation of fellow students presented a comprehensive list of demands to state officials. He expressed optimism regarding the response from the government, which acknowledged the legitimacy of the protesters’ concerns and indicated that their issues were under consideration.

In response to the ongoing discussions, Jharkhand Minister Sudivya Kumar Sonu has initiated a new email platform aimed at collecting insights and recommendations from students and other stakeholders. This move is intended to facilitate a more transparent dialogue regarding policy reforms related to recruitment procedures.

Specific Demands and Reactions from State Government

The protesters at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium have articulated specific requests for the government, including the cancellation of examinations conducted by JSSC since 2019. They also call for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into alleged irregularities, stringent action against involved parties, and the release of category-specific cut-off scores, OMR sheets, and answer keys to promote transparency in the examination process.

Furthermore, the protesters have urged the establishment of a recruitment calendar modelled on standards set by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and Staff Selection Commission (SSC). The ongoing protests reflect a broader demand for accountability and reform in competitive examinations within the state.

In light of the rising tension, the state authorities have reiterated their commitment to engaging with the concerns raised by candidates. They have encouraged aspirants and relevant stakeholders to take advantage of the new email facility to submit constructive feedback, aimed at enhancing recruitment processes moving forward.
