PM Modi Warns Gen Z Against Pursuing Shortcuts in Life

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the importance of taking meaningful paths in life while addressing India’s Gen Z. His message resonates with the current trend dominated by reels, influencers, and an inclination towards instant gratification, where shortcuts may seem appealing. During a recent event, he referenced a common warning seen at railway stations, emphasising the dangers of choosing quicker but riskier routes.

In his address, Modi articulated the lesson behind the warning: “A shortcut will cut you short.” He expressed concern for young individuals who may be swayed by influencers, noting that their advice can lead one in various directions that may not align with personal growth or well-being. This cautionary advice was given at the launch of former President Ram Nath Kovind’s autobiography, titled “Triumph of the Indian Republic: My Life, My Struggles”, in New Delhi on August 11, 2026.

The Prime Minister’s words came as part of a broader initiative to engage with a generation increasingly immersed in digital platforms. His suggestions for the youth included reading autobiographies of those they admire, reinforcing the idea that thoughtful choices can guide them forward in life.

Digital Engagement with the Youth

The recent remarks are a continuation of PM Modi’s efforts to connect with the younger demographic, particularly following protests by students linked to the satirical group, Cockroach Janta Party. This incident highlighted various issues impacting youth, prompting the Prime Minister to reassess his approach in reaching out to this audience.

Modi has employed a more relatable social media strategy, adopting styles and language that resonate with younger users. Notably, he has integrated selfie-style videos into his outreach, often commencing with informal greetings such as, “Hi, friends.” This reflects a conscious shift towards a more approachable and engaging way of communication.

Modi has also embraced popular phrases among youth, such as “first in my bloodline,” which further demonstrates his attempt to align himself with contemporary trends. Additionally, he has promoted a “Get Ready With Me” format to highlight traditional Indian textiles, aiming to blend cultural appreciation with modern trends.

Government’s Shift Post-Protests

The Prime Minister’s increased engagement follows recent demonstrations led by students and job seekers, primarily prompted by the leak of the NEET-UG examination paper. These protests evolved into a significant political challenge, contributing to the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

In response to the shifting landscape, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its affiliated organisation, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), have escalated their outreach efforts targeted at young individuals. Ministers and various government departments have actively turned to short-form video content, acknowledging the consumption patterns prevalent among the youth.

One notable development is the Ministry of External Affairs making its first appearance on Snapchat last week, indicating a marked embrace of platforms popular with younger audiences. Following the student protests, Modi encouraged his ministers to adopt a more active presence on these digital platforms, stressing the need for content that appears genuine rather than overly polished and curated.
