Nora Fatehi has been summoned by the National Commission for Women (NCW) concerning the ongoing controversy linked to the song ‘Sarke Chunar’ from the film KD – The Devil. The NCW has reportedly called her to appear on May 7 at 11:30 am, following an initial notice served on May 6.

Background of the Controversy

The controversy surrounding ‘Sarke Chunar’ began earlier this year after the release of the Hindi version of the track in March. The song, which gained attention online, faced significant backlash on social media, with numerous users criticising its explicit and suggestive lyrics. The portrayal of women in the music video and the accountability of its creators were also points of contention among the critics.

Amid the uproar, Fatehi attempted to clarify her involvement by stating she only participated in the Kannada version of the song. Allegations suggest she did not give consent for the Hindi version, further complicating her association with the project. When the NCW first reached out to her, she indicated that she was out of the country, which led to her request for a rescheduled hearing.

Legal scrutiny surrounding the track has intensified in recent weeks. Notably, Sanjay Dutt, who features in the song, was also summoned by the NCW regarding the same issue. Following this, he expressed his regrets in a public apology and announced his support for women’s welfare initiatives, committing to fund the education of 50 tribal girls as part of his social responsibility efforts.

Implications for the Film and Music Industry

The ongoing debate surrounding ‘Sarke Chunar’ has drawn attention to the ethical responsibilities of filmmakers and music producers in terms of the lyrical content and representation of women in mainstream cinema. The controversy raises critical questions about how artistic expression intersects with societal values and norms.

Despite the controversy, KD – The Devil continues to generate considerable excitement among audiences as one of the most awaited Kannada films in production. The movie stars Dhruva Sarja and features an ensemble cast, including Shilpa Shetty, V. Ravichandran, Reeshma Nanaiah, and Jisshu Sengupta in prominent roles.

As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen how the producers and involved artists will navigate the backlash. Their responses could affect not only the perception of their work but also set a precedent for future projects within the industry, as they may need to reconsider how they approach sensitive themes.
