New Era of Governance Begins: West Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari Unveils Major Policy Shift in First Cabinet Meet

The CSR Journal Magazine

Marking a historic shift in West Bengal’s political landscape, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari chaired his administration’s inaugural Cabinet meeting at Nabanna today. The session resulted in a sweeping set of directives aimed at aligning the state with Union Government policies, bolstering border security, and overhauling administrative transparency.

Following the meeting, Adhikari emphasized that his “double-engine government” would prioritize the principles of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, moving away from “ego-driven” politics toward a model of development seen in other BJP-led states.

Priority on National Security and Central Integration

In a significant departure from the previous administration’s stance, the Cabinet fast-tracked the strengthening of international borders.

BSF Land Allocation:* The Chief Secretary and the Land Department have been given a 45-day deadline to transfer all necessary land to the Border Security Force (BSF).

Ayushman Bharat: West Bengal has officially moved to adopt the Ayushman Bharat health scheme. The Health Secretary has been tasked with finalizing the agreement with the Union Health Ministry immediately.

Scheme Implementation: A broad range of Central initiatives—including PM-SHRI, Ujjwala Yojana, and the Vishwakarma Scheme—will now be aggressively implemented via District Magistrates.

Administrative and Legal Reforms

The Adhikari government announced several measures to modernize the state’s bureaucracy and legal framework:

Judicial Alignment: The state will fully transition to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Bureaucratic Training: West Bengal’s IAS officers will now participate in Central Government training programs to ensure administrative parity with other Indian states.

Census Directives:* The government has immediately enforced the June 2025 Union Home Ministry census circular, which the CM claimed had been ignored by the previous regime.

Social Welfare and Employment

Addressing the state’s youth and vulnerable populations, the Chief Minister provided clarity on the future of state-funded aid:

Age Limit Extension:* In a move to boost employment, the upper age limit for government job applications has been increased by 5 years.

Welfare Transparency: While existing welfare schemes will continue, a strict audit will be conducted to remove “ghost beneficiaries,” deceased individuals, and illegal immigrants from the rolls.

Justice for Martyrs: The Cabinet paid tribute to 321 BJP workers described as “martyrs,” promising strict legal action against those responsible for political violence.

“This government does not function on ego; it functions on principles,” Chief Minister Adhikari stated, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Fear Out, Trust In” mantra. He reaffirmed that the era of political friction with the Center is over, replaced by a commitment to national security and transparent governance.
