Monsoon Rain Expected to Cover Delhi-NCR in Two Days

The CSR Journal Magazine

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the southwest monsoon is set to blanket Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and the remainder of Uttar Pradesh within the next two to three days. This announcement was made on June 30, following a prolonged period of uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity that has affected the residents of Delhi-NCR.

According to the weather agency, conditions now favour the monsoon’s advance into these regions. The update comes in the wake of significant heatwave conditions that have gripped the capital, with daytime temperatures soaring and humidity levels rising, creating a perception of hotter weather than the actual readings.

Over the past day, Delhi recorded maximum temperatures in the range of 42-43°C, while minimum temperatures ranged between 29-31°C. These figures are notably up to 5°C above the seasonal average, contributing to discomfort among city dwellers.

Recent Weather Patterns

The southwest monsoon typically makes its arrival in Delhi around June 27; however, this expected timeline has not been consistently met over recent years. In 2025, for instance, it arrived two days late on June 29. Similarly, in 2024 and 2022, the monsoon came on June 28 and June 30, respectively, with the most significant delay occurring in 2021 when it only reached the capital on July 13, 16 days after the normal date.

As of June 30, the monsoon has progressed into various parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, some regions of Uttar Pradesh, most areas of Uttarakhand, and portions of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh. The IMD has identified the current weather trends as conducive for the monsoon’s final advance into the Delhi-NCR region and much of northwest India.

Light rainfall has been recorded in isolated pockets of the city, but it has not provided substantial relief from the persistent heat. Instead, it has led to the accumulation of moisture-laden air, which has yet to translate into a meaningful drop in temperatures.

Expected Changes in Weather Conditions

Heavy rainfall is also anticipated from July 1 to July 3, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. Such weather could disrupt daily activities but is crucial for alleviating the prolonged heatwave.

Furthermore, temperatures are projected to decline sharply as a result of the expected rainfall. The maximum temperatures, which have recently hovered around 42-43°C, are forecast to decrease to 38-40°C on June 30, followed by a further drop to 36-38°C on July 1, and eventually stabilising between 32-34°C around July 2 and 3. This significant reduction will help restore more comfortable conditions in the region.

The anticipated arrival of the monsoon is welcomed by residents of Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad, as it is expected to usher in cooler temperatures, improved air quality, and a much-needed respite from the discomfort associated with pre-monsoon heat.
