Monsoon May Worsen Dry Eyes: Humidity, Allergens Trigger Eye Discomfort

The CSR Journal Magazine

Despite the arrival of the monsoon bringing cooler temperatures, people often expect relief from dry eyes due to increased humidity. However, eye care professionals assert that this expectation is misleading. The rainy season can actually exacerbate dry eye symptoms for various reasons. While humidity may reduce tear evaporation, it also introduces hidden factors that can negatively impact eye health.

Dr. Swetha Kudtarkar, a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital in Hubli, explains that dry eye disease is not restricted to winter months; it can pose a challenge throughout the year, including during monsoon. Recognising the triggers and implementing basic preventive measures can help alleviate discomfort and protect eye health.

Individuals should be aware that dry eye disease develops when tear production is insufficient or when tears evaporate more rapidly. A stable tear film is vital for maintaining clear vision and protecting the eyes from infections.

Factors Worsening Dry Eyes During the Monsoon

One major reason dry eye symptoms can worsen during the rainy season lies in the sudden shifts in environmental humidity. Rapid fluctuations in weather conditions—from hot and dry to cool and humid—can disrupt the tear film, particularly in those already prone to dry eye issues. Such variations can cause discomfort and exacerbate existing symptoms.

Additionally, increased levels of allergens commonly occur during this season. The moist environment is conducive to the growth of mould, fungi, and dust mites, which can irritate the eyes and intensify dry eye symptoms. Many individuals mistake these symptoms for seasonal allergies, not recognising that dry eye disease may also be influencing their condition.

Moreover, as temperatures rise or humidity increases, people are often drawn indoors where air conditioning is prevalent. The use of air conditioning can lead to decreased indoor humidity, thereby exacerbating eye discomfort due to faster tear evaporation, despite a humid climate outside.

Environmental pollutants and dust also pose threats to eye health. Prior to heavy rains, dust storms and construction activities can elevate pollution levels, resulting in increased exposure to irritants that aggravate dryness and inflammation.

Recommendations for Managing Dry Eyes During the Rainy Season

To mitigate the impact of dry eyes in the monsoon, experts suggest several effective practices. Individuals should ensure adequate hydration by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, regardless of the cooler weather. Additionally, preservative-free lubricating eye drops may be beneficial if advised by an eye care professional.

It is also advisable to avoid having fans or air conditioning units blowing directly into the face, as this can further exacerbate moisture loss. The use of an indoor humidifier can help maintain comfortable humidity levels. Basic eye hygiene, such as rinsing the eyes gently with clean water and avoiding rubbing them, can also reduce irritation.

For those who wear contact lenses, proper cleaning and adhering to recommended wearing times is essential. Reducing eye makeup during periods of irritation can help to lessen discomfort. Furthermore, consciously blinking more often, particularly during prolonged screen time, can help alleviate symptoms.

Special attention should be given to certain populations, including older adults and women post-menopause, who may be more susceptible to dry eye disease due to hormonal changes. Persistent symptoms warrant an eye examination to identify any underlying causes and initiate appropriate treatment.

Individuals should not dismiss ongoing discomfort. While many attribute itchy or watery eyes to seasonal allergies, consistent issues such as redness or blurred vision may indicate dry eye disease. Early detection and lifestyle adjustments can be key to preventing more severe symptoms and ensuring long-term eye health.
