Union MoS Sanjay Seth Inaugurates India’s First International Ophthalmology Research Conference

The inaugural International Ophthalmology Research Conference is set to commence in New Delhi, featuring the participation of key defence officials and prominent medical professionals. Organised by the Department of Ophthalmology at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in collaboration with the All-India Ophthalmological Society, the event will take place at the Manekshaw Centre, Delhi Cantonment, from May 9 to 10. Union Minister of State for Defence, Sanjay Seth, will officially inaugurate the conference, highlighting its importance in the national realm and in military medical advancement.

Attendees will include the Chief of Defence Staff, the three Service Chiefs, and the Defence Secretary, reflecting the tri-service nature of this scholarly gathering. Nearly 200 ophthalmologists are expected to converge at this event, marking a significant milestone in the field of ophthalmology in India, with a focus on recent developments across various specialisations.

Distinguished Participation and Contributions

The conference will feature over 100 esteemed faculty members from renowned institutions such as AIIMS, New Delhi, PGI Chandigarh, LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, and Sankara Netralaya in Chennai, alongside the Aravind Eye Care System. This diverse representation aims to enrich discussions and presentations, ensuring a comprehensive examination of contemporary issues and advancements in ophthalmology.

Noteworthy international participants include Prof Harminder Singh Dua from the University of Nottingham in the UK and Colin Siang Hui Tan, a Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist from Tan Tock Seng Hospital in Singapore. Prof Dua is acclaimed for his groundbreaking work on chemical ocular injuries and his discovery of Dua’s Layer, a pivotal aspect of corneal anatomy that has significantly influenced the understanding of such injuries. Meanwhile, Colin Siang Hui Tan is celebrated for his expertise in retinal imaging and AI-driven ophthalmic diagnostics, further enhancing the conference’s scope.

With leading experts sharing their knowledge, the conference is expected to serve as a vital platform for young ophthalmologists in service, allowing them to showcase their skills while learning from established authorities in the field. This initiative is designed to inspire future generations of medical professionals.

Goals and Future Directions

The primary objective of the conference, titled All-India Ophthalmological Society – Armed Forces Ophthalmology Update (AIOS-AFOU 2026), is to promote meaningful civil-military cooperation in the field of ophthalmology. By fostering collaboration between military and civilian professionals, the event aspires to enhance the development of services and practices that would ultimately benefit the nation.
