Monsoon Advances Across Peninsular India

The CSR Journal Magazine

The southwest monsoon has significantly progressed as of Monday, June 8, 2026, covering various regions of peninsular India and adjacent water bodies, as per reports from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This weather system has now extended into parts of the west-central and east-central Arabian Sea, along with states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, while also marking its initial presence in parts of Telangana.

Signifying the start of India’s principal rainy season, which typically spans from June to September, the southwest monsoon accounts for almost seventy per cent of the nation’s annual precipitation. This rainfall is crucial for agricultural practices, essential water supplies, and power generation throughout the country.

A satellite image captured by the IMD illustrates extensive cloud cover attributed to these monsoon systems over the Indian peninsula, indicating the ongoing weather changes.

Monsoon Impact on Agriculture

The IMD has reported that the northern limit of the monsoon presently stretches across the Arabian Sea and goes through regions such as Harnai in Maharashtra, Solapur, Kalaburagi in Karnataka, Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh, and Chennai in Tamil Nadu. From this point, the monsoon continues over the Bay of Bengal, impacting portions of the Northeast as well.

This latest advancement signifies a steady march of the monsoon, with reports indicating that in some areas, its progress aligns closely with or even slightly exceeds the expected timeline for advancement. The ongoing expansion is anticipated to provide much-needed rainfall to crucial agricultural regions that are preparing for the kharif sowing season, which sees the cultivation of crops like rice, cotton, soybean, and pulses.

Residents in these agricultural zones are optimistically awaiting the rain. The arrival of the monsoon is essential for timely sowing and helps ensure a successful growing season.

Future Outlook for the Monsoon

Experts in meteorology have stated that the prevailing conditions remain favourable for further strengthening of the monsoon over the next two to three days. The IMD anticipates that the system will expand into the entirety of the central Arabian Sea and more regions within Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.

Furthermore, the weather system is expected to soon cover all remaining sections of Tamil Nadu and the southwest Bay of Bengal, while also advancing further north across the west-central and northwest Bay of Bengal.

Additionally, the IMD projects a marked increase in rainfall activity across eastern and northeastern India in the forthcoming 48 to 72 hours. The monsoon is likely to extend its reach into regions such as Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, and Sikkim, ensuring that the remaining areas of the Northeast will also feel the influence of the monsoon.

Residents in these areas should prepare for more frequent and widespread rainfall, along with a gradual decline in daytime temperatures as the onset of the rainy season becomes more pronounced.
