Pinarayi Vijayan, the leader of the opposition in Keralam, emphasised that the monsoon disaster’s repercussions are still being felt across the state. In a press conference held on August 12 in Thiruvananthapuram, he highlighted the dire situation faced by numerous families who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods due to the calamity. Vijayan reported that the devastating event has claimed the lives of thirty-three individuals, while three others remain unaccounted for after going missing at sea.

During his address, Vijayan spoke about his visits to the families affected by the disaster, including the relatives of those still missing at sea and the family of Rajesh, who tragically lost his life while engaged in rescue operations. He underscored the importance of addressing the concerns raised by these families, noting that many who perished were the primary earners in their households. He stressed the need for ongoing government support to prevent these households from becoming destitute.

Long-Term Support Initiatives

Vijayan underscored the necessity for sustained assistance for families who now face financial insecurity as a result of the disaster. He called for long-term measures to be implemented, urging the government to continue the initiatives that had been effective during previous crises. “The measures adopted by past administrations should be upheld to ensure that affected families do not find themselves in hardship when immediate relief efforts conclude,” he stated.

The opposition leader also called for the establishment of permanent housing solutions for those who have lost their homes due to the monsoon impacts. He emphasised that rebuilding efforts are crucial, stating that “houses should be constructed for those without shelter,” as well as the necessity to clear any outstanding debts faced by the affected families. Furthermore, he advocated for job opportunities to be made available to at least one member of each impacted household.

Vijayan specifically mentioned the need for employment for Rajesh’s wife, indicating that the family must continue to receive support following his death. He reiterated that “the government should take responsibility for the education of the children,” highlighting the long-term implications of this disaster on family structures.

Focus on Rehabilitation Efforts

As Keralam continues to navigate the aftermath of heavy monsoon rains and associated disasters, Vijayan pointed out the pressing need for rehabilitation efforts to be prioritised. While rescue operations have made significant strides in the affected areas, he insisted that the focus must now shift to assisting families in reconstructing their lives. This includes ensuring that households who have lost their primary earners do not remain without a reliable source of income.

He emphasised the importance of integrating debt relief, housing, and employment support into the broader framework of rehabilitation for affected families. Vijayan’s call for sustained efforts reflects a commitment to assisting those impacted by the disasters for the long term.
