Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, along with Deputy CM Nemcha Kipgen and Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen, announced the immediate reopening of National Highways for unrestricted movement across communities in Manipur. This decision was shared at the Kangpokpi District Headquarters on August 8, 2026. The Chief Minister’s visit included discussions with various community leaders, emphasising ongoing efforts aimed at restoring peace and reconciliation in the state.

The announcement also included the resumption of the Imphal-Dimapur bus service, reflecting a significant step towards improving connectivity and normalising life in the region. The Chief Minister’s engagement with community leaders is viewed as part of broader peace-building initiatives by the state government.

During his visit, Singh also inaugurated numerous developmental projects and issued welfare benefits to eligible beneficiaries under various government schemes. His actions indicate a commitment to both infrastructure development and social welfare as integral components of his administration’s strategy.

Development Initiatives and Public Welfare

Upon reaching Kangpokpi, the Chief Minister received a warm welcome from local villagers. Accompanied by key district officials and leaders, he inaugurated significant projects, highlighting the historical depth of Manipur, which has a rich history of approximately three millennia. He cited the “Seven Years’ Devastation” in the 19th century, underlining the challenges the state has faced.

In various discussions, Singh accentuated the need for unity among communities, urging residents to prioritise their Indian identity over regional affiliations. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by diverse groups in protecting Manipur’s territory and expressed concern about emerging divisions influenced by certain vested interests.

As part of enhancing healthcare facilities, the Chief Minister announced plans to upgrade the Kangpokpi District Hospital to a 100-bed facility equipped with a CT Scan unit. He also revealed intentions to construct new Primary Health Centres in Motbung and T. Waichong, alongside upgrading the Community Health Centre at Saikul. These moves are aimed at strengthening public health infrastructure.

Sport and Infrastructure Development Announcements

Singh highlighted the importance of sports in fostering community spirit and development. As part of a strategic vision for the districts, he shared plans for developing new sports facilities in collaboration with local leaders. This initiative is designed to nurture sporting talent in the region and promote healthy competition among youth.

Additions to infrastructure include a new City Convention Hall cum Guest House, alongside the establishment of a dedicated computerised examination centre. These projects are part of a comprehensive plan to enhance local amenities and services.

The Chief Minister also distributed various welfare incentives and benefits, including ambulances and health scheme cards, showcasing the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of vulnerable populations. His remarks during these initiatives reflected on the socio-economic impacts of ongoing conflicts, particularly on the youth.

Deputy CM Nemcha Kipgen echoed the Chief Minister’s sentiments regarding balanced development across both valley and hill regions, stressing the importance of mutual love and trust among communities to achieve lasting peace in Manipur. She, along with MLA Haokholet Kipgen, expressed a need for cooperation across communities to facilitate a return to normality after recent conflicts.
