Gurcharan Das, a distinguished author, was awarded the Lifetime Libertarian Award on Saturday, becoming the first Indian writer to attain this recognition. The honour was presented at the 40th World Conference held in Kathmandu, Nepal, by Liberty International, an organisation dedicated to promoting freedoms. Das expressed his happiness upon receiving the award and reflected on the concept of “inner freedom,” which he framed as India’s unique contribution to Western liberalism.

In his acceptance speech, the 82-year-old author highlighted the profound realisation that life sometimes rewards one’s deepest beliefs. He articulated the value of personal liberty, which has been a consistent theme throughout his lengthy career in literature and public discourse.

Scholarly and Literary Contributions

The award was positioned as a culmination of Das’s career, during which he has significantly influenced India’s economic and moral discussions. His work has consistently championed freedom, entrepreneurship, and individual responsibility over the past three decades. A notable aspect of his literary contributions is a quartet of texts addressing the four classical Indian aims of life, which he interprets as relevant to contemporary human flourishing.

Among his noteworthy works are “India Unbound,” “The Difficulty of Being Good,” “Kama: The Riddle of Desire,” and “Another Sort of Freedom.” Besides these books, he has authored a novel, a collection of essays, and an anthology of plays. Furthermore, Das has contributed to a 17-volume economic and business history of India published by Penguin, showcasing a lengthy commitment to exploring India’s socio-economic landscape.

Das has also played a pivotal role in shaping public policy as the former chair of the Board of Trustees of the Centre for Civil Society, a prominent think tank in India. He continues to be an active member of the board, further emphasising his dedication to policy discussions related to liberty and individual rights.

Liberty International’s Mission and Impact

Liberty International, which was founded in 1982, aims to foster a global network of advocates committed to promoting the ideals of a free and open society. Since its inception, the organisation has held 40 world conferences, bringing together scholars, entrepreneurs, and policymakers to further the agenda of liberty. During his speech, Das underscored the increasing relevance of Liberty International’s mission at a time when freedoms worldwide seem to be receding.

Prior to his established writing career, Das served as the Chief Executive Officer of Procter & Gamble India. He holds an honours degree in philosophy from Harvard University, where his significant academic accomplishments earned him the Phi Beta Kappa designation for “high attainments in liberal scholarship.” His diverse experiences contribute to his authoritative voice in literary and public discussions regarding freedom and economic policy.
