Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to appear in Parliament and clarify the government’s stance regarding the crackdown on recent student protests and the issue of allegedly missing funds. His demands came during a conversation with ANI on August 3, where he expressed his concerns about the government’s silence on critical matters.

Kharge emphasised the need for the leaders to provide their perspectives, especially in light of the alleged mishandling of the protests that occurred on July 20 at Jantar Mantar. He questioned the implications of the government’s actions during the protests.

He articulated, “What is the government’s position on the missing funds? The Prime Minister and Home Minister must take responsibility and communicate their views in the House.” The focus on accountability is evident as Kharge insists that significant issues are being overlooked.

Concerns Raised Over Protest Tactics

Addressing the violence during the July 20 protest, Kharge described a scene where students were reportedly subjected to harsh measures. He highlighted the use of pellet guns and tear gas against the demonstrators, questioning the rationale behind these aggressive responses. “Why did this happen?” he asked, pointing out the distressing methods employed during the protests.

Kharge accused the government of fostering an environment of fear and intimidation among the youth, stating that students are entitled to express their dissent without facing violence. He believes that the manner in which the government responded raises serious concerns about democratic values and student rights.

Moreover, Kharge has been vocal about what he perceives as a trend of neglect from the Prime Minister, who, according to him, has refrained from engaging in parliamentary discussions and prefers to use social media to communicate. “This is not only an insult to Parliament but also to the voters who expect more transparency from their leaders,” he remarked.

Opposition’s Target on Fund Mismanagement

The opposition has intensified its scrutiny of the central government, particularly targeting the management of donations intended for the Shri Ram Mandir Trust. Kharge pointed out that there are concerns over funds that have allegedly gone missing while under the Prime Minister’s supervision. He stated this violates the trust expected from the government.

In a post shared on social media, Kharge emphasised the need for accountability from the Home Minister regarding the violent dispersal of the student protests. He asserted, “The Home Minister should clarify the actions taken by the police against students with respect to the lathi charge and the use of pellet guns.” This highlights the rising tensions between the opposition and the government.

As the political landscape intensifies, Kharge’s statements signal a substantial push from Congress to hold the government accountable for its handling of protests and financial transparency. The mounting pressure for explanations regarding both the student protest crackdown and the management of funds reflects a broader demand for governance that is responsive and responsible in addressing public concerns.
