The recent severe turbulence experienced by an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi on August 4 has prompted a response from Union Minister of Civil Aviation Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu. He assured the public on Saturday that the situation is being addressed with care and urgency. Naidu confirmed that the majority of the injured passengers have been treated and discharged shortly after landing, providing reassurance to those affected.

Speaking on the medical status of the passengers, he noted that most individuals were released from the hospital within hours. “The turbulence incident that happened, most of the passengers in the first few hours only, were discharged from the hospital,” Naidu stated. The Minister relayed that around 24 passengers were given medical attention due to various inconveniences and were also discharged following thorough examinations.

Although most individuals have returned home, Naidu mentioned that four crew members remain in the hospital under medical observation. The Minister highlighted the continuous monitoring of their health by medical professionals, adding, “Everyone is providing full support.” This statement reflects the government’s commitment to the welfare of those affected by the turbulence.

Investigation into Flight Incident Underway

Minister Naidu confirmed the involvement of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in the investigation to determine the cause of the turbulence. He made it clear that the final report regarding the incident is awaited, emphasizing that the authorities are engaged in a thorough investigation. “As far as how the incident happened, the DGCA is investigating it, and we still have to know the final report on that,” he explained.

The turbulence reportedly occurred during cruising altitude, causing a sudden altitude change that led to injuries among a small number of passengers and crew members. An eyewitness account claims that the aircraft experienced a sudden drop of approximately 300 feet at about 9:30 am IST, resulting in passengers being thrown against the cabin ceiling.

In light of the incident, the DGCA’s investigation will not only look into the specifics of this turbulence but also examine the broader aspects of aviation safety. Naidu reiterated that the government is adapting to modern industry requirements rather than simply following other countries’ strategies. The need for progressive regulations in aviation was underscored as a vital component of the current governmental focus.

Legal Actions and Complaints Filed

In a related development, a passenger aboard the troubled flight has lodged a complaint with the DGCA, detailing the distressing experience faced during the turbulence. The complaint alleges that the turbulence caused injuries to two elderly family members. The passenger reported that his 62-year-old mother-in-law suffered a rib injury and a suspected spinal injury, while his 64-year-old father-in-law sustained bruises from the sudden descent.

The complaint, submitted through the AirSewa portal, highlights the emotional and physical toll that such incidents can have on passengers. Visuals from the airport on the day of the turbulence showed ambulances waiting outside the terminal, with several injured passengers being assisted into wheelchairs and others receiving medical evaluation while displaying visible signs of distress.

Such incidents raise questions regarding aviation safety and preparedness for unexpected events. The government’s proactive approach to investigating and reforming aviation standards is expected to address these concerns comprehensively.
