The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has rescheduled the hearing of petitions challenging the government’s decision to offer jobs to the families of those who lost their lives in the Karur stampede. The new date for the hearing is set for July 27. The adjournment was granted following a request from the State for additional time to file a counter affidavit regarding the petitions.

Details of the Karur Stampede

The tragedy occurred during a rally led by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader and actor Vijay on September 27, 2025. The incident resulted in the deaths of forty-one individuals and left numerous others injured. The scale of the tragedy prompted significant public concern and scrutiny regarding crowd management practices at such events.

In October 2025, the Supreme Court intervened by transferring the investigation from a state-level Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Supreme Court underscored the necessity for an independent and objective investigation into the circumstances surrounding the stampede.

A three-member committee, headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi, was established to monitor the CBI investigation. This committee aims to ensure a thorough and unbiased examination of the events leading to the stampede while evaluating factors such as crowd control measures and coordination between the event’s organisers and local authorities.

Government Initiatives for Victims’ Families

On July 10, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK President C Joseph Vijay visited Karur to participate in various government and party activities, including the distribution of job appointment orders to the victims’ families. This initiative aims to provide some level of support to those affected by the tragedy, with 32 job appointments reportedly handed to the legal heirs of the deceased.

Among the recipients is Vimal, who tragically lost his one-and-a-half-year-old son, Thruvish, in the stampede. In an interview ahead of the appointment ceremony, Vimal expressed his mixed feelings about the government’s offer, recognising the significant loss his family endured while acknowledging the potential positive impact of the job offer.

Vimal noted that he had submitted his application forms to the Taluk office as instructed and looked forward to meeting the Chief Minister. He expressed uncertainty about the nature of the job that would be offered, stating, “I don’t know what kind of job it will be. I will find out after I meet him.” He reiterated that despite the devastating loss of his son, he views the government’s intervention as a constructive step in the midst of his sorrow.

Continuing Legal Proceedings

The court’s decision to extend the interim order in the case remains in effect as legal proceedings continue. The families of the victims are awaiting responses regarding their petitions as well as the ongoing investigation into the stampede. The upcoming hearing on July 27 is anticipated to provide further insights into the government’s position and actions regarding job provisions for those affected.
