Protests against the arrest of Udhayanidhi Stalin, the Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu, have taken place across the state. Demonstrators gathered outside the Madras High Court, expressing their dissent over what they deemed an unjust detention linked to purportedly derogatory comments he made regarding Chief Minister Vijay and actress Trisha. The protests have drawn significant attention amidst ongoing political tensions in the region.

Detentions and Allegations of Political Vendetta

In Thoothukudi, former minister P Geetha Jeevan was among those detained near the old bus stand during a road blockade protest led by DMK workers. Geetha Jeevan has alleged that Stalin’s arrest represents political vendetta, asserting that it came at the hands of the Thanjavur East Police. He has been charged under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those related to harassment and IT regulations.

Geetha Jeevan articulated that the government was unable to counter the DMK’s questions and engage in proper debate within the Legislative Assembly. He characterised the arrest of Udhayanidhi Stalin as a repressive act against political opposition. The DMK has vowed to resist these measures to curtail democratic protests and voices of dissent in Tamil Nadu.

Similar demonstrations were witnessed in Ranipet district, where DMK workers led by former minister R Gandhi gathered near the Muthukadai Bus Stand. These protesters echoed sentiments of political revenge, alleging that the ruling TVK government had targeted Udhayanidhi Stalin for vindictive reasons. Their calls for his immediate release were accompanied by prominent chants against the government.

Police Response and Escalation of Tensions

As police intervened to detain demonstrators, minor scuffles broke out between the protesters and law enforcement personnel. Many of the individuals involved were subsequently taken into custody, reflecting the rising tensions surrounding the situation. Police escorted Udhayanidhi Stalin from Chennai through various checkpoints, including Kelambakkam and Vandalur, as he was transported in a police vehicle.

After his arrest, protests and road blockades occurred at numerous sites along the transport route, with DMK functionaries and supporters adamantly demanding his release. Similar scenes unfolded in Pollachi, showcasing a widespread public outcry against what they perceive to be an unconstitutional action by the state government.

The unrest was further inflamed by comments allegedly made by Udhayanidhi Stalin during a recent public address concerning the Cauvery water dispute. He reportedly experienced interruption from audience members chanting a name, to which he responded, mentioning the need for water to reach specific destinations. The context of his remarks has been called into question, prompting further debate among supporters and detractors alike.

Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Defence

Udhayanidhi Stalin has firmly denied making any derogatory remarks and indicated that the controversy surrounding his comments stems from edited and misleading materials. He stated that claims attributing certain statements to him were fabricated, asserting that the truth was being obscured through disinformation tactics. He expressed his commitment to addressing the situation through legal channels.

Stalin’s comments have been termed as a further example of the ongoing political contestation in Tamil Nadu. The unfolding events have the potential to shape the political landscape as the DMK continues to assert its position against the ruling party amid claims of systemic oppression.
