A delegation from agricultural associations in Tamil Nadu, led by Deivasigamani, convened today with Udhayanidhi Stalin, the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. This meeting, held in Chennai, centred around expressing appreciation for Stalin’s vocal support for farmers’ concerns in the legislative assembly. The representatives acknowledged his recent protests in Thanjavur, which were conducted on behalf of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, highlighting pivotal farmer-related issues.

Concerns Voiced During the Meeting

The agricultural representatives also took the opportunity to voice their distress over the recent police actions against Udhayanidhi Stalin, who was arrested while advocating for farmers’ rights. They emphasised that this incident exacerbated existing tensions and highlighted the struggles faced by farmers in Tamil Nadu. The delegation called for continuous support from Stalin in raising their demands, particularly the need to recognise the Delta region as a drought-affected area and to ensure a complete waiver of crop loans.

Amidst mounting unrest, the joint movement, comprising 84 agricultural organisations, has been actively staging protests across the state. The representatives underscored their sentiment that the Tamil Nadu Government has failed to adequately respond to their requests and concerns, particularly relating to the waivers of crop loans that have not been met. They urged Stalin to persist in advocating for their causes in the assembly and public forums.

Commitment from Udhayanidhi Stalin

In response to the discussion, Udhayanidhi Stalin articulated his commitment to continue pressing for agricultural issues within the assembly. He reassured the representatives that his efforts would follow in the footsteps of Muthamil Arignar Karunanidhi, the revered leader of the DMK. Stalin affirmed his role as an unwavering ally for farmers, promising to keep their concerns at the forefront of legislative discourse.

The rising tensions surrounding farmers’ demands come at a crucial time as the Tamil Nadu government gears up for its agriculture budget, announced by Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister R Vinoth. This budget follows the broader state budget introduced by Finance Minister Marie Wilson, highlighting the government’s focus on agricultural welfare amidst farmers’ ongoing struggles.

Recent government measures, including a loan waiver plan announced by Chief Minister Vijay on May 25, are specifically targeted at diversifying support for marginal farmers. This includes a waiver of crop loans up to Rs 50,000 for those borrowing from cooperative banks, alongside assistance for larger agricultural operations. The commitments made reflect the state’s presumed efforts to alleviate the financial burden on farmers and reinforce their livelihoods.
