The incessant rainfall affecting Kashmir has resulted in a notable rise in the water level of the Jhelum River. Reports indicate that multiple gates of the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project Dam, located in the Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir, have been opened to regulate the escalating inflow caused by the heavy rains.

According to local residents, the water level of the Jhelum River has surged by approximately one foot since the rainfall commenced on July 23. Authorities have issued advisories urging those living in low-lying areas and along riverbanks to stay vigilant and adhere to the safety measures recommended by the administration.

Dr Ejaz, a local official, expressed optimism regarding the weather, suggesting that conditions would improve in the coming days. He noted that the rise in the Jhelum’s water level has been gradual and that there is no immediate cause for alarm unless the region experiences further heavy rainfall. “As for the situation, I believe that God willing, it will improve,” he stated.

Public urged to Remain Vigilant and Not Spread Panic

Dr Ejaz also called on residents to refrain from panic and to remain in regular communication with the authorities. He emphasised the importance of strictly following official advisories to ensure their safety. “Their best precaution is to stay in touch with the government and pay close attention to any advisories issued,” he said.

Local resident Iqbal Ahmad reported a similar observation, noting the one-foot increase in the river’s water level since the previous evening. He assured that despite the rise, there was no reason for concern as the administration was closely monitoring the situation. “The government is making every effort,” he mentioned during the interview.

As the region continues to experience intermittent rainfall, the iconic Chenab Rail Bridge has been shrouded in dense fog, reducing visibility in various parts of the valley. The local administration has advised caution among residents living near the banks of the Chenab River.

Authorities Monitor Situation Closely Amid Increased River Flow

In Ramban district, various gates of the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project Dam were opened following a significant rise in inflow attributed to heavy rains in the surrounding districts of Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban. The district administration confirmed that this measure was taken to manage the increasing water levels in the reservoir.

This regulated release of water has led to a substantial increase in the downstream flow of the Chenab River. Authorities have urged the public, particularly those residing in vulnerable areas, to exercise caution in light of this development.

Residents are strongly advised to avoid approaching the swollen river, refrain from crossing flooded channels, and adhere strictly to all safety instructions issued by the district administration and other relevant authorities. The administration reiterated that it is keeping a close watch on the situation and has appealed for community cooperation in ensuring public safety.
