JD(U) Releases Candidate List for 2026 Bihar Legislative Council Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Janata Dal (United) has announced its candidates for the upcoming Bihar Legislative Council elections, scheduled for 2026. This announcement was made on June 5, 2026, in Patna. The party will be contesting with three candidates in the biennial polls, reflecting its strategic move to strengthen its representation in the state legislature.

Nishant Kumar, the son of former Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, is one of the nominees and will be representing Patna. Bharti Mehta has been chosen to contest from Madhubani and Shivrani Devi Prajapati will be standing for election in West Champaran. These selections suggest the party’s intention to leverage familial and regional ties for electoral gain.

In addition to the biennial elections, the JD(U) has also nominated Lalan Prasad for the bye-election in Sheikhpura, which is necessitated by a current vacancy. This move is indicative of the party’s strategy to maintain a presence in the legislative council amid shifting political dynamics.

The Election Commission has set the calendar for the bye-election to the Bihar Legislative Council, which will be conducted by the Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs). The notification for this was issued on June 1, 2026, laying out the timeline for nominations and voting.

Nomination Closes on June 8

The nomination period for candidates will close on June 8, with scrutiny taking place the following day. Candidates will be allowed to withdraw their nominations up until June 11. Following this process, the voting is scheduled for June 18, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, allowing ample time for voters to cast their ballots.

The counting of votes will occur on the same day at 5:00 pm, ensuring a prompt announcement of results. The election process is expected to be accomplished before the deadline of June 20, 2026, adhering to the regulatory timeframe set by the Election Commission of India.

These elections are critical as they will fill the existing vacancies and strengthen the Upper House of the state’s legislature. Additionally, the Election Commission has also outlined the upcoming biennial elections for other legislative council seats, with members’ terms expiring on June 28, 2026. The JD(U)’s engagement in this electoral process reflects its ongoing commitment to maintain and enhance its foothold in Bihar’s political landscape.
