Indian Railways has sanctioned a multitracking project costing Rs 976 crore, focused on the 29-km stretch between Danapur and Fatuha in Bihar. This initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion on a vital section of the Patna rail corridor. It is part of the government’s broader strategy to bolster railway infrastructure along high-density routes, thereby promoting economic development within the region.

The plan includes the construction of third and fourth railway lines along the Danapur-Fatuha segment, which is a crucial corridor for train operations. This upgrade is anticipated to significantly smoothen operations on this heavily trafficked route, allowing for enhanced scheduling and train reliability.

Upon completion and activation of the project, it is forecasted that the enhanced capacity will facilitate the addition of 22 new passenger trains and 18 freight trains on a daily basis during the first operational year. Furthermore, the initiative is expected to boost freight capacity by enabling the transportation of an additional 5.2 million tonnes annually.

Significance of the Danapur-Fatuha Route

The Danapur-Fatuha route is integral to the larger Delhi–Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction–Patna–Kiul–Bhagalpur–Howrah railway corridor, recognised as one of the busiest rail routes in India. Improving this section is critical for increasing both passenger and freight train traffic efficiency.

This project also forms part of the Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor initiative of Indian Railways, which specifically aims to enhance freight movement for various industries and energy projects. The upgrade is expected to help mitigate delays that are often experienced by both passenger and goods trains on this corridor.

Increasing rail capacity is essential for meeting the demands of a growing populace and industrial sector, making this project a key element in addressing current congestion issues. It will enable the railway network to operate more effectively, thus benefiting numerous stakeholders.
