The CSR Journal Magazine

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is set to arrive in New Delhi on the evening of July 1 for a three-day official visit, which will conclude on July 3. This marks her inaugural trip to India since taking office. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has indicated that her visit will centre around the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, aiming to enhance bilateral relations significantly.

During her stay, Takaichi is expected to engage in discussions that focus on expanding investment and innovation opportunities between Japan and India. The engagements are also anticipated to reinforce economic connections and robust supply chains, particularly in key sectors such as semiconductors and critical minerals.

Additionally, diplomatic sources suggest that maritime security and defence technology collaboration will be highlighted throughout her visit, along with the development of an “Industrial Value Chain” that integrates the Bay of Bengal and Northeast India. This overarching objective seeks to solidify Japan’s commitment to strengthening ties in the region.

Agenda and Expected Outcomes

Takaichi’s participation in this summit will provide both nations a platform to assess and augment various aspects of bilateral cooperation. Moreover, discussions will encompass regional and global challenges of mutual concern, enabling a comprehensive dialogue on pertinent issues.

This forthcoming visit follows Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Tokyo in August 2025 for the 15th Annual Summit, underscoring the continuous commitment shared by both countries to enhance their Special Strategic and Global Partnership. It is aimed at reinforcing collaborative frameworks that benefit both nations.

Furthermore, Takaichi is scheduled to attend the India-Japan Business Forum meeting. Key proposals on the agenda include cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), a large-scale green ammonia project in Odisha, and initiatives aimed at strengthening biogas collaboration. These projects are designed to bolster regional resilience and reflect Japan’s proactive approach to sustainable development.

Strengthening Strategic Ties

The visit is poised to facilitate economic growth through enhanced investment and innovation dialogue. Emphasis will be placed on fortifying economic security, which includes the establishment of resilient supply chains across critical sectors such as semiconductors and essential minerals.

Deliberations are expected to produce several key documents, including a Joint Statement on the Annual Summit, frameworks for energy resilience, and a series of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) that encompass diverse sectors including AI, pharmaceuticals, batteries, and critical minerals.

Since the upgrade of ties to a Special Strategic and Global Partnership in 2014, India and Japan have consistently worked towards a diversified and meaningful engagement strategy. Sources have noted that Modi’s recent visit to Japan has set a directive for the upcoming decade, seeking to prioritise security, economic collaboration, investment, innovation, and cultural exchanges between the two nations.

Both Japan and India recognise the necessity of collaboration in furthering the updated vision of a ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific’ (FOIP), presented by Takaichi. Through this visit, both nations are expected to reinforce their commitment to promoting an international order grounded in the rule of law.
