India’s Defence Ambitions Soar As C-295 Aircraft Nears Final Rollout Stage

The CSR Journal Magazine

The imminent rollout of the first domestically assembled Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft marks a significant milestone for India’s defence manufacturing sector. Reportedly nearing completion at the Tata-Airbus facility in Vadodara, Gujarat, this event is anticipated to be a transformative step forward for the nation’s aerospace capabilities. Visuals from the Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) assembly line indicate that the aircraft is in its final production stages, although no official confirmation has been made by the Indian government, Airbus, Tata, or the Indian Air Force.

If the rollout proceeds as expected, this aircraft would represent the first military plane manufactured in India by a private entity. This development signifies a notable shift in the defence production landscape, which has historically been dominated by state-owned enterprises. The project is being lauded as pivotal for the government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, which aim to diminish reliance on imported defence materials.

Details of the C-295 Programme

The C-295 is a medium tactical military transport aircraft specifically designed for various operations, including troop movement, cargo transport, medical evacuation, and special operations. Its short take-off and landing capabilities enable it to function effectively from semi-prepared and rugged airstrips, essential for India’s operational requirements, particularly in challenging terrains like mountainous regions and remote bases. The aircraft can accommodate a payload of over 9,000 kilograms and transport up to 71 personnel, potentially replacing the Indian Air Force’s ageing Avro fleet and supporting the phased replacement of parts of the An-32 transport fleet.

India signed a contract with Airbus in 2021 for a total of 56 C-295 aircraft. Under the terms of this agreement, the first 16 aircraft are being delivered directly from Spain, while the remaining 40 are to be manufactured and assembled in India through a collaboration between Airbus and Tata Advanced Systems. This arrangement enhances India’s indigenous manufacturing capabilities and aligns with national defence policies.

This project is expected to significantly bolster the domestic aerospace ecosystem. Reports indicate that over 13,000 aircraft parts and more than 4,000 sub-assemblies are currently being produced in India, fostering involvement from numerous Indian companies and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Future production batches are projected to feature nearly 75 per cent indigenous content, further strengthening local capabilities.

Expanding Operational Use and Future Prospects

The applications for the C-295 aircraft extend beyond the Air Force, as the Indian Navy and Coast Guard have also placed orders for maritime surveillance variants. This development broadens the aircraft’s role within India’s defence apparatus and enhances its contribution to national security. Defence experts suggest that the C-295 programme could become a pivotal moment for India’s long-term military aviation and defence manufacturing aspirations.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar previously indicated that the first Made-in-India C-295 would be rolled out by September 2026. The Vadodara facility, which was inaugurated jointly in 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, underscores the deepening defence relationship between India and Spain. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to boosting bilateral cooperation in defence manufacturing and technology.

This move towards self-reliance not only has implications for operational readiness but also aims to stimulate economic growth in the defence sector. As India continues to enhance its defence production capabilities, the C-295 project stands as a hopeful symbol of a new era in indigenous military manufacturing.
