India and Greece held the 14th round of Foreign Office Consultations in New Delhi on Friday, reviewing the full spectrum of bilateral relations and reaffirming their commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership between the two countries.

The consultations were co-chaired by Sibi George from the Indian side and Andreas Fryganas from the Greek side.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the discussions covered political engagement, trade and investment, defence and security cooperation, education, culture, digital public infrastructure and people-to-people exchanges. Both sides also explored new avenues to further deepen cooperation across these sectors.

The previous round of consultations was held in Athens in June 2023.

Focus On Strategic Partnership And Security Cooperation

During the meeting, officials reviewed progress made since the elevation of ties to a strategic partnership and discussed measures to accelerate cooperation in areas of shared interest.

Defence and security cooperation featured prominently in the discussions, reflecting growing engagement between the two countries in recent years. Both sides reiterated their commitment to combating cross-border terrorism and emphasised the importance of international cooperation in addressing security challenges.

The consultations also provided an opportunity to assess ongoing collaboration in trade, investment and connectivity, as India and Greece seek to expand economic engagement and strengthen commercial links.

Broader Cooperation Across Multiple Sectors

Apart from strategic and economic issues, the two delegations discussed cooperation in education, cultural exchanges and digital public infrastructure. Officials highlighted the role of people-to-people ties in enhancing mutual understanding and fostering stronger long-term relations.

The discussions reflected a shared interest in broadening bilateral engagement beyond traditional sectors and exploring emerging areas of collaboration that can contribute to sustainable growth and innovation.

As India deepens its engagement with European partners, Greece continues to be viewed as an important partner in the Mediterranean region, offering opportunities for cooperation in trade, logistics, maritime affairs and regional connectivity.

Regional And Global Issues Also Discussed

The two sides exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual concern and reviewed cooperation in multilateral institutions, including the United Nations and other global forums.

According to MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, the consultations focused on strengthening political and defence relations, boosting trade and investment and expanding cultural and people-to-people cooperation.

The discussions underscored the growing convergence between India and Greece on a range of global issues and their shared commitment to maintaining close diplomatic coordination.

At the conclusion of the consultations, both countries agreed to hold the next round of Foreign Office Consultations in Athens at a mutually convenient date, signalling their intention to sustain the momentum in bilateral engagement and further advance the India-Greece strategic partnership.
