India Experiences Unprecedented Heatwave with Majority of Hottest Cities

The CSR Journal Magazine

India stands at the centre of an extreme heat surge, with a staggering 95 out of the world’s 100 most sweltering cities located within its borders, as per real-time global temperature data. This striking statistic has been reported following temperature readings taken at 5:00 pm on April 24, highlighting the severity and expanse of the ongoing heatwave that has enveloped large parts of the subcontinent.

Various regions, from central India to the Indo-Gangetic plains, have recorded temperatures exceeding 40°C, with several locations nearing 45°C. It is noteworthy that the list comprises not only large urban hubs but also smaller towns, thereby indicating the widespread nature of the heatwave conditions affecting the country.

States such as Maharashtra, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha are among the most severely impacted, with several cities from each of these regions occupying prominent positions on the global temperature rankings. The sheer concentration of extreme heat across such a vast geography underscores the alarming weather conditions currently experienced in the country.

Meteorological Factors Behind the Heat Surge

Meteorologists have attributed this surge in temperatures to a combination of multiple factors, including persistent dry winds, clear skies, and a delay in pre-monsoon activities. The significant lack of rainfall and cloud cover has enabled rapid temperature increases during daylight hours, while warm nights exacerbate the situation by preventing any substantial cooling.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heatwave warnings across several regions, indicating that such conditions are likely to persist in the coming days. Prolonged exposure to these high temperatures poses an increased risk of heat-related illnesses among vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and individuals working outdoors.

What makes the current circumstances particularly alarming is the simultaneous occurrence of extreme heat across multiple states. Unlike localized heat events, this wave affects numerous cities concurrently, thereby contributing a large number of locations to the extreme temperature rankings globally.

Potential Relief on the Horizon

Experts note that while the current pattern of synchronised heat events is becoming more frequent, it may be a reflection of broader climatic shifts and the increasing baseline temperatures observed in recent years. Urban heat island effects, along with diminishing green cover and changing weather systems, further amplify the heat impact in various regions.

Despite the relentless heat, forecasts suggest a possible respite with the approach of thunderstorms and gusty winds in parts of eastern and northeastern India over the upcoming days. Such weather changes may offer temporary relief from the oppressive heat; however, significant and lasting reductions in temperature are unlikely until stronger pre-monsoon systems or the monsoon itself begins to advance further into the region.

As it stands, India is enduring some of the highest temperatures recorded globally, a reality that highlights the immediacy of the current heatwave and the escalating challenges posed by extreme weather in a warming world. The situation requires vigilant monitoring and appropriate measures to safeguard public health during this unprecedented climatic event.
