The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that extensive rainfall is likely across Himachal Pradesh from August 3 until August 7. While isolated instances of heavy rain are anticipated in several districts, authorities have not issued any flash flood warnings for the area as of yet. This forecast is attributed to the state being under the influence of an active monsoon system.

Sandeep Kumar Sharma, Senior Scientist at the IMD Himachal Pradesh, indicated that rainfall activity is expected to remain consistent over the next several days. He mentioned that while heavy rain is on the horizon, the current situation does not warrant any flash flood alerts, providing some reassurance to residents.

Rainfall Patterns and Trends Observed

This monsoon season has seen significant variability in rainfall across the state. From June 1 to August 3, Himachal Pradesh has experienced an overall rainfall deficit of approximately 9 per cent. Nonetheless, certain regions have reported much higher levels of precipitation. For instance, Jubbal, Kotkhai, Dharamshala, and Rampur have recorded excess rainfall of nearly 76 per cent, while specific weather stations have noted increases as high as 168 per cent above normal rainfall during the previous month.

The IMD’s forecast provides a detailed outline of anticipated rainfall over the upcoming days. On August 3, heavy rain is expected in parts of Bilaspur, Kangra, and Shimla. The following day, August 4, will likely see similar conditions in Una, Bilaspur, and Kangra. On August 5, the focus shifts to Kangra and Chamba, while Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, and Shimla are expected to receive heavy rain on August 6.

Sharma also noted that the current temperatures across Himachal Pradesh are approximately in line with seasonal averages, reflecting only slight variations. The persistence of active monsoon conditions is expected to continue throughout the week, contributing to ongoing rainfall activity.
