India And Italy Declare 2027 As Year Of Culture To Deepen Bilateral Ties

The CSR Journal Magazine

The announcement that 2027 will be designated as the Year of Culture between India and Italy follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Italy, according to Sibi George, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs. This decision is part of a broader initiative aimed at bolstering cultural, educational, defence, and interpersonal connections between the two nations.

During a media briefing, George highlighted the significance of both leaders in promoting bilateral relations, particularly through enhanced cultural exchanges and tourism initiatives. The announcement signifies a commitment to strengthening ties, facilitating more mutual understanding and appreciation of each nation’s heritage.

In conjunction with the cultural celebrations, an agreement was signed to collaborate on the development of the National Maritime Heritage Complex located at Lothal in Gujarat. There is also a planned twinning programme with UNESCO World Heritage Sites to further cultural exchange and cooperation.

Outcomes of the Diplomatic Engagement

A key outcome from Modi’s trip was a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) intended to streamline the movement of nurses from India to Italy. This agreement is expected to enhance the flow of Indian healthcare professionals into Italy, providing opportunities for greater collaboration in the healthcare sector.

Additionally, an Indo-Italian roadmap focusing on higher education and research was established. This roadmap aims to foster cooperation in scientific and technological fields, thereby enhancing educational exchange and collaborative research projects.

During the trip, Prime Minister Modi was awarded the Agricola Award by the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization in recognition of his contributions towards food security and sustainable agriculture. Modi dedicated this accolade to Indian farmers and agricultural scientists, underscoring the importance of their work in rural development.

Defence Cooperation and Economic Initiatives

The diplomatic visit included discussions on defence cooperation, during which both countries signed a Joint Declaration of Intent and an industrial roadmap aimed at enhancing defence manufacturing capabilities. This agreement is anticipated to foster partnerships between defence industries, with particular focus on technology sharing, design, and joint production of equipment.

India’s drive for self-reliance in defence manufacturing presents opportunities for collaboration with Italian firms in various sectors, including aerospace and naval platforms. Adani Defence and Aerospace’s partnership with Leonardo SPA for helicopter maintenance and training was mentioned as a significant development in this regard.

George noted that Italy is a vital partner in the India-EU defence and security partnership, which was formalised in January this year. Ongoing defence engagements include collaborations for the procurement of weapon systems and local production initiatives aimed at bolstering India’s defence capabilities.

Both nations also agreed on enhancing the mobility of students and skilled workers, especially in STEM fields, while discussing strategies to combat irregular migration and human trafficking. These efforts are aligned with both countries’ commitments to ensuring safe, legal migration practices.
