Gwadar Police Dismiss 14 Officers Over Militant Attack Response

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Gwadar police have dismissed 14 personnel after an inquiry revealed their lack of resistance during an attack by suspected militants on a police station. This decision was made public by authorities on Monday, highlighting concerns over the effectiveness of security measures in Balochistan, a province grappling with frequent assaults on security forces and government facilities.

Officials stated that the attack occurred on the night of June 7, when unidentified armed individuals overpowered the stationed personnel, seized a large amount of firearms and ammunition, and departed without facing any opposition. Abdul Waheed, Superintendent of Police (Security) in Gwadar, noted that the assailants successfully took away significant quantities of arms and government property from what is considered the main police station in the area.

The dismissed personnel included sub-inspectors, all of whom faced allegations of gross negligence, corruption, and irresponsible conduct during their duty. The inquiry was prompted by the serious implications of the attack and rising public scrutiny surrounding policing in the violence-affected region of Balochistan.

Context of Violence in Balochistan

Balochistan, the largest yet least developed province in Pakistan, has faced a long-standing insurgency led by groups such as the Balochistan Liberation Army and the Baloch Liberation Front. These groups claim that the local population is being deprived of the benefits from the province’s abundant natural resources, which they allege are being exploited by Islamabad.

Recent attacks have particularly targeted Chinese interests, as Gwadar is a crucial element of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. The area has experienced a surge in violence, including suicide bombings and coordinated assaults against government installations and individuals linked to Chinese enterprises.

On June 29, a notable incident occurred in Quetta, the provincial capital, where a prominent trader was fatally shot in broad daylight. Separately on the same day, four policemen sustained injuries due to a roadside blast in Mastung district, a region adjacent to Quetta. The improvised explosive device was reportedly planted along the Mian Ghandi Link Road, detonating as a police vehicle transporting prisoners passed through the site.

Previous Attacks and Security Operations

The wave of violence in Balochistan is not new, with major incidents including a devastating explosion in May that killed at least 24 individuals and left 50 others injured. The Balochistan Liberation Army claimed responsibility for that attack, which occurred on a shuttle train in Quetta.

In March 2025, BLA militants also hijacked the Jaffar Express train, resulting in the deaths of over 30 people, including security personnel, while holding over 350 passengers hostage. Security forces launched a targeted operation that led to the deaths of 33 terrorists involved in that incident.

Furthermore, a suicide bombing at the Quetta Cantt Railway Station in November 2024 resulted in at least 32 fatalities and numerous injuries. The ongoing violence reflects serious challenges to security forces in maintaining order and controlling insurgent activities across the province. The recent dismissals of police personnel in Gwadar highlight the urgent need for improved training and adherence to security protocols in a region facing continuous threats.
