Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav has raised concerns regarding the police’s handling of student protests in New Delhi. During the protest on July 20, organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), allegations were made regarding the severe treatment of students, including claims that some were physically assaulted and female students had their clothing damaged. Yadav’s comments were aimed at questioning the prevailing atmosphere under the Bharatiya Janata Party’s governance, which she described as a contradiction to the touted ‘Ram Rajya’.

In her statements, Yadav asserted, “Is this the BJP’s ‘Ram Rajya’? Where students are beaten up, and girls’ clothes are torn?” She expressed disappointment with the government’s unwillingness to engage in dialogue over pressing issues, including the Ram temple, National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), and the behaviour of police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel towards protesters. Furthermore, she called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Calls for Discussion on Student Rights

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also joined the fray, stating that students are advocating for their legitimate rights through peaceful protest, which she views as a fundamental aspect of democracy. She commented that the treatment of students during recent events is indicative of broader undemocratic practices occurring both within Parliament and on the streets. According to Gandhi, the protests are neither improper nor uncalled for, as students highlight critical issues such as repeated examination leaks.

During her address, the Wayanad MP remarked on the considerable funds allocated to education, amounting to Rs 1.4 lakh crore, while large debts are reportedly being waived for large corporations. She argued for transparency and accountability within the education sector and the government’s approach to student welfare.

Deepender Hooda, another Congress MP, supported the ongoing demonstrations, affirming that the opposition’s protests will remain until the Education Minister steps down and a meaningful discussion on the education system takes place. Hooda’s emphasis on educational reform highlights the opposition’s focus on pressing matters affecting students and their academic future.

Opposition Protests Intensify at Parliament

The police actions during the July 20 protest have led to increased scrutiny of law enforcement practices, particularly in managing public demonstrations. Opposition leaders have vocally condemned the use of force, alleging that protestors faced oppressive measures, including lathi charges and the deployment of tear gas by police. This has heightened tensions between the government and opposition parties, as calls for reforms and accountability intensify.

In response to the government’s actions, various opposition lawmakers, including prominent figures such as Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, and Priyanka Gandhi, donned black attire to symbolise their dissent against the current administration. The demonstrations on Parliament premises underline the opposition’s concerted effort to rally support for educational reform and governmental accountability in the face of rising public discontent.

As the political landscape evolves in response to the students’ demands, it remains to be seen how the government will address these pressing issues, particularly in the context of escalating protests and calls for Minister Pradhan’s resignation.
