The Delhi Police Crime Branch has successfully apprehended a 23-year-old man, Sohail, who was wanted in the murder case of 26-year-old Tarun in Uttam Nagar. The arrest occurred on August 8 near Palam Flyover while Sohail was allegedly attempting to escape from Delhi.

Officials have stated that Sohail, a resident of Uttam Nagar, had been declared a proclaimed offender by Additional Sessions Judge Shivali Bansal at Dwarka Courts on July 31. This classification followed the violent events surrounding Tarun’s assassination, which reportedly involved a minor dispute during Holi festivities.

According to police reports, Sohail faces serious charges under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as well as specific sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989. The authorities have reiterated their commitment to addressing such violent crimes within the community.

Details of the Incident During Holi Celebrations

The tragic incident that led to Tarun’s death occurred on March 4, 2023, during Holi celebrations. An argument reportedly sparked after a water balloon was dropped near Tarun’s home, escalating into a violent confrontation.

According to witnesses, despite Tarun’s family attempting to defuse the situation with an apology, a group of individuals armed with sticks and rods later assaulted him as he returned home. The attack resulted in severe head injuries, which subsequently led to his death.

The Crime Branch disclosed that the murder case stemmed from ongoing tensions between the two families, with previous disputes allegedly contributing to the escalating violence on that day. The incident has raised concerns regarding public safety during festive occasions in the area.

Law Enforcement’s Strategic Approach to the Investigation

In the lead-up to his arrest, the Crime Branch’s ER-1 team had been actively gathering intelligence on proclaimed offenders. Head Constable Mohit Kumar received information indicating that Sohail would be at Palam Flyover, allegedly preparing to leave the city.

Upon evaluating the information, Inspector Gurmeet Singh and Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sanjeev Kumar coordinated efforts to apprehend the suspect. The team effectively set a trap, successfully identifying Sohail and bringing him into custody.

Following his arrest, officers confirmed Sohail’s identity and status as a proclaimed offender through records at the Uttam Nagar Police Station. During interrogation, he admitted to his involvement in the murder and detailed the previous enmity his family had with Tarun’s family.

Furthermore, investigators learned that Sohail had concealed himself in various locations, including Jaipur, after fleeing Delhi to avoid capture. He had reportedly returned to the city to visit family shortly before his arrest, with plans to escape to Nepal.

Sohail is currently enrolled in the first year of a BA programme through the School of Open Learning at Delhi University, having previously completed Class 12. Legal proceedings against him are now underway as the investigation continues.
