The Delhi Police has confirmed detentions following violent incidents during a student protest in central Delhi on July 20, 2026. The situation escalated to stone-pelting, prompting law enforcement to implement crowd-control measures. Joint Commissioner of Police for the Central Range, Madhur Verma, stated that the gathering had violated existing prohibitory orders, rendering it an unlawful assembly necessitating immediate action.

Verma noted, “There was an unlawful assembly that had to be dealt with; there were some incidents of stone-pelting, and the Delhi Police have detained some protesters. Appropriate action is being taken.” The police stated that over 50 officers, including those from the IPS and DANIPS, sustained injuries during the unrest.

Sources indicated that several protesters were apprehended across various locations connected to the violent events. Furthermore, police are analysing video footage to identify additional individuals who participated in the violence. Authorities currently possess more than 40 videos that feature many individuals who obscured their faces during the confrontations.

Appeals for Peace and Restraint

In response to the disturbances, the Delhi Police has urged all participants to maintain peace and cooperate with law enforcement. A message posted on X requested that protestors conduct themselves peacefully and adhere to lawful directives given by officers on duty. Additionally, the police instructed citizens to avoid circulating rumours or misinformation and to obtain information from reliable sources.

The police underscored the necessity for public order by stating, “Citizens are requested to rely only on authentic sources of information and extend their cooperation to Delhi Police in maintaining peace, harmony and public order.” Such measures aim to restore normalcy amidst the ongoing protests.

As tensions persisted, a delegation from the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) met with the Union Health Minister. The discussions focused on the demands set forth by the protestors, aiming to end the sit-in. The Union minister appealed directly to the protestors to bring an end to their demonstration, marking a significant moment in the negotiations.

CJP Outlines Demands During Negotiations

The Cockroach Janata Party’s chief spokesperson, Saurav Das, shared that they articulated three primary demands during their meeting with Minister J.P. Nadda. The demands included the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, compensation of Rs 1 crore to families of NEET aspirants reportedly affected by tragedies connected to the exam, and the immediate release of activist Sonam Wangchuk, currently hospitalised.

Das conveyed the urgency of their demands, stating, “The protest will continue until Dharmendra Pradhan resigns. We approached J.P. Nadda regarding these demands.” The spokesperson also expressed that they remained at Nadda’s residence for approximately four hours discussing their issues and seeking a resolution.

While Nadda committed to escalating their concerns at the appropriate levels, no definitive promises regarding the demands were made. Das reiterated that peaceful protestors will persist until their requests are acknowledged by the authorities.
