US President Donald Trump has appointed White House Staff Secretary Will Scharf as the next White House counsel and assistant to the president, replacing David Warrington, who is set to move to the private sector.

Trump announced the change on Sunday, saying Scharf would assume the new position from September 1. Scharf currently serves as White House staff secretary and has also previously chaired the National Capital Planning Commission.

Scharf To Take Over as White House Counsel

Trump announced the appointment in a post on Truth Social, praising both Scharf and Warrington for their work.

“It is my Great Honor to announce that, effective September 1st, Will Scharf will become Assistant to the President and White House Counsel, replacing a man, David Warrington, who has done a truly outstanding job as White House Counsel and, before that, for my Presidential Campaign. David will be going on to the Private Sector,” Trump said.

Trump described Scharf’s performance as White House staff secretary as “amazing” and said he was confident the lawyer would perform well in his new role.

“Tough, Strong, and Smart! He also loves our Country, and respects the Law. Will Scharf will do a great job as White House Counsel!” Trump said.

Trump’s Longstanding Ties With Scharf

Trump said he had known Scharf well and highlighted his previous work representing him in several legal cases, including proceedings before the US Supreme Court during the Biden administration.

“Will has done an amazing job in his current role as White House Staff Secretary, and has also served as Chairman of the National Capital Planning Commission. I know Will well! He previously represented me in numerous cases, including at the Supreme Court, during the Biden Administration’s corrupt and illegal campaign of Weaponization,” Trump said.

Scharf has also worked as a federal prosecutor and in private legal practice. He previously served as a clerk for two federal appeals court judges, according to Fox News.

He earned his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his law degree from Harvard Law School. Scharf has held several legal and government positions before joining the Trump administration.

David Warrington to Move to Private Sector

Warrington will leave his position as White House counsel and move to the private sector, according to Trump.

Trump praised Warrington’s performance as White House counsel and noted that he had previously worked for Trump’s presidential campaign.

CNBC reported that Warrington had also served as Trump’s personal attorney and legal adviser during his 2024 presidential campaign.

Scharf is expected to formally assume the role of White House counsel on September 1, marking a change in the senior legal leadership of the Trump administration.
