Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are projected to experience a spell of moderate to heavy rainfall this afternoon. Thunderstorms have begun to form over various areas, signalling a shift in weather conditions. The meteorological activity is expected to escalate as the day progresses, with brief yet intense bursts of rain anticipated.

The primary window for this rainfall is likely to occur between 1 pm and 4 pm, affecting regions including Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad. Also, rain activity may extend towards parts of Gurugram between 2 pm and 6 pm, although the distribution of rainfall is predicted to be inconsistent.

Intensity of Rainfall and Its Implications

Weather models indicate that approximately 40 to 60 per cent of the NCR could see rain during the active period. However, where thunderstorms do form, the rainfall could be heavy. Individual rain spells may last between 30 to 60 minutes, potentially leading to significant pressure on drainage systems and resulting in temporary waterlogging, especially in low-lying areas.

The short duration of heavy rainfall may also cause sudden changes in road conditions, with decreased visibility and surface water accumulation on major roads. As a result, commuters travelling in the afternoon may face delays, particularly in locations experiencing the most severe showers.

The development of thunderstorms in the region is attributed to existing atmospheric instability and moisture in the air. This unpredictability can lead to highly localised rainfall, where one area receives a substantial downpour while a nearby location remains dry.

Evening Outlook and Temperature Conditions

Fortunately for those commuting in the evening, the risk of substantial rainfall is anticipated to decrease significantly after 6 to 7 pm. While the possibility of isolated showers cannot be entirely excluded, widespread or intense rain is not expected during late evening hours.

This morning, Delhi woke up to high humidity levels, with the minimum temperature recorded at 27.6 degrees Celsius across multiple weather stations, including Safdarjung, Palam, Ayanagar, and Lodhi Road. The Ridge area reported a lower minimum temperature of 24.5 degrees Celsius.

It’s important to note that no rainfall was recorded at any of the five weather stations from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm on the previous day, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD) data. In terms of air quality, the national capital’s air was classified as ‘satisfactory,’ with an average Air Quality Index (AQI) value recorded at 88, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
