Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Taranjit Singh Sandhu, convened a meeting on August 4, 2026, with senior officials from the Delhi Police and the Delhi Traffic Police to assess traffic management and enforcement measures in the capital. The discussions were centred on anticipatory measures for the ongoing monsoon season, the Kanwar Yatra, and the forthcoming Independence Day celebrations.

During the review, the Lieutenant Governor commended the significant decrease in waterlogging sites, which dropped from 169 to 65 this season. This improvement, he noted, had positively impacted traffic flow and reduced related issues. The enhanced efforts are attributed to better infrastructure and ongoing initiatives aimed at urban mobility.

Furthermore, citizens’ involvement through Project Sangam has been identified as a pivotal factor in improving traffic conditions across the city. The initiative encourages public participation in traffic management efforts to foster a cooperative environment between authorities and residents.

Monsoon Preparedness and Law Enforcement Measures

Officials reported a marked increase in enforcement actions against traffic violations. Notably, the actions against wrong-side driving surged by one hundred thirteen per cent, with a total of 2,321 First Information Reports (FIRs) filed in this category. The heightened enforcement reflects a proactive approach to maintaining road safety during the busy monsoon season.

In addition to addressing wrong-side driving, special operations are being conducted to combat unauthorised parking. These measures are part of broader traffic management strategies aimed at minimising congestion and ensuring a more orderly flow of vehicles throughout the city. The focus on strict enforcement is expected to deter violations and improve overall road safety.

In a statement on social media platform X, the Lieutenant Governor emphasised the importance of a visible police presence on roads and the need for public cooperation to mitigate traffic congestion. He affirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining a safe and orderly transportation environment for all citizens. The collaborative effort with the community is seen as vital in addressing traffic challenges effectively.

Preparations for Upcoming Events and Continuous Improvements

The dialogue also encompassed the specific arrangements needed for upcoming events such as the Kanwar Yatra and Independence Day. The officials discussed deploying additional traffic personnel to manage the expected surges in vehicular and pedestrian movement during these occasions. Adequate planning aims to ensure a smooth and secure experience for participants and citizens alike.

Moreover, the Lieutenant Governor reiterated that maintaining an efficient traffic management system is crucial to enhancing the quality of life for residents.
