Delhi was affected by heavy rainfall on the morning of August 6, 2026, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert. This alert also extended to Noida and Ghaziabad, highlighting the potential for isolated heavy rainfall. Furthermore, a yellow alert remained active for Gurugram and Faridabad, indicating a likelihood of lighter yet significant rain. Residents were urged to remain vigilant as rain continued throughout the morning, leading to considerable disruption in traffic across the National Capital Region (NCR).

Major Roads Facing Severe Traffic Disruption

The heavy rain resulted in slow-moving traffic on several crucial roads and highways in Delhi. Key areas that experienced significant congestion included Aruna Asaf Ali Marg, Shaheed Jeet Singh Marg, and the JNU Gate–Jia Sarai Road. The National Highway 48, particularly the stretch between Dhaula Kuan and Rajokri Flyover heading towards Gurugram, was among the worst affected. The Delhi-Meerut Expressway and various locations around AIIMS also saw drastic reductions in vehicle speed, compounding delays for commuters.

During the morning rush hour, commuters reported that travel times increased dramatically, with many vehicles moving at a crawl due to traffic backups. The situation was exacerbated in the vicinity of the Green Park Metro station and other key junctions, leading to frustration among those trying to reach their destinations.

Social media was inundated with complaints from frustrated commuters detailing their experiences. Many users shared that journeys that typically take only a few minutes were extending to nearly an hour. Complaints about inadequate traffic management, especially at busy intersections like the ones near Yusuf Sarai Market and the JNU Gate area, were common, illustrating the challenges faced by commuters in the city.

Waterlogging Impacts Residents and Businesses

Alongside traffic issues, waterlogging in various parts of Delhi was reported, causing significant disruptions for both residents and local businesses. In Shastri Park, located in northeast Delhi, shops were inundated with rainwater, hindering operations and affecting customers. Major roads, including those in Sainik Farms and parts of Rohtak Road, experienced flooding, which limited vehicular movement and raised concerns among commuters.

Images shared on social media showed substantial water accumulation in areas like Kalindi Kunj, where vehicles were seen navigating through waterlogged stretches. The rainfall, while providing some relief from the heat and humidity, further revealed the city’s ongoing struggle with monsoon-related troubles, including repeated flooding and ensuing traffic congestion.

With intermittent showers expected to continue, the challenges of traffic jams and waterlogging persisted across Delhi and neighbouring NCR cities. Authorities have advised residents to carefully plan their travel routes, anticipate delays, and remain informed about upcoming weather alerts as further rainfall is projected in the coming days.
