The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) confirmed that an unfortunate fire occurred at a guest house in Malviya Nagar, killing 21 individuals and injuring numerous others. The blaze erupted early on June 3, resulting in the death of 17 foreign nationals and four Indian citizens. Emergency services reported that 49 people were taken to local hospitals for treatment.

A post by the CMO indicated that a Magisterial Inquiry has been initiated to investigate the lapses surrounding the incident, with an emphasis on assigning accountability where deemed necessary. An FIR has been filed against the property’s owner, highlighting the government’s commitment to a thorough examination.

Authorities have stated that preliminary investigations suggest the fire may have started near the staircase on the ground floor, where materials suspected of fueling the blaze were found. Reports indicate that all windows in the establishment were allegedly sealed, which significantly hampered escape efforts for residents as the fire spread rapidly.

Legal Actions and Arrests Made

In connection with the fire, the Delhi Police have apprehended Lovkesh Bajaj, the co-owner of the Hotel Flourish Stays. This arrest follows the issuance of a Lookout Circular for him and his spouse. The police are examining all relevant details to establish the sequence of events leading to the tragedy.

Among the injured, 21 individuals unfortunately succumbed to their injuries while undergoing medical treatment, with eight others discharged after receiving care. Efforts are ongoing to support the victims still hospitalised.

Simultaneously, Delhi’s fire authorities have discovered LPG cylinders within the premises during rescue operations. A comprehensive investigation is currently underway, incorporating forensic analysis to elucidate the conditions that led to this catastrophic incident.

Government’s Response and Safety Measures

Following the disaster, Delhi’s Home Minister Ashish Sood convened a high-level review meeting to discuss the situation. He stated that decisive action is necessary in light of the tragic loss of life. A coordinated enforcement campaign aimed at improving fire safety standards across the city was announced.

The enforcement measures will involve teams from the district administration, police, municipal authorities, and fire services conducting inspections and taking action against any property found to violate safety regulations. Minister Sood emphasized that the safety of Delhi’s citizens remains the government’s top priority.

Additionally, the minister reiterated that every potential measure would be employed to ensure such incidents do not occur in the future. His comments underscore the commitment to establishing safer living conditions, with a particular focus on guest houses and other accommodations within the city.

As the investigation unfolds, the government is expected to take stringent measures against unauthorised properties and establishments operating without adherence to fire safety norms. The CMO’s firm stance indicates a significant shift towards enhancing safety oversight in response to this tragic event.
