Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Launches ‘Garmi Se Jung’ Initiative to Protect Citizens From Heatwave

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has initiated a comprehensive campaign to address the adverse impacts of the ongoing heatwave, known as ‘Garmi Se Jung’ (War Against Heat). The campaign, launched on May 6, includes the deployment of 13 Mobile Heat Relief Units across the national capital and the introduction of a detailed ‘Heat Action Plan 2026’. This initiative is designed to provide timely assistance to citizens suffering from extreme heat conditions.

Mobile Heat Relief Units and Their Purpose

The Mobile Heat Relief Units are essentially mobile stations equipped to distribute essential supplies. These units will operate daily from 11 am to 6 pm, targeting busy areas such as bus stands, markets, and labour hubs throughout the city. Each vehicle is outfitted with a large supply of chilled water, first-aid kits, and health supplies, including ORS packets and cotton towels. Over one hundred volunteers have been recruited to ensure the effective distribution of these items to those in need.

This year’s campaign places special emphasis on outdoor workers and students who are particularly vulnerable to heat exposure. To safeguard these groups, the government has mandated a temporary suspension of outdoor construction activities between 1 pm and 4 pm, which are considered the peak hours of heat exposure. Additionally, schools are implementing a ‘Water Bell’ system to remind students to hydrate regularly, while outdoor activities such as assemblies and sports have been suspended to protect the children from heat-related ailments.

The government’s plan goes beyond immediate relief, seeking to improve long-term strategies for heat management. More than 339 health centres and hospitals have established dedicated “cool rooms” and are well-equipped with ice packs and medications specifically for heat-related illnesses. In addition, city officials are advocating for residents to remain indoors as much as possible and to utilise the 112 helpline if they encounter individuals in distress due to the heat.

Long-Term Strategies for Heat Management

In conjunction with immediate relief measures, the ‘Heat Action Plan 2026’ aims to develop sustainable solutions to combat rising temperatures in the city. Plans include increasing the number of trees planted in urban areas to provide additional shade and improving public access to water dispensers in community facilities. These actions are designed to create a more resilient urban environment that can better cope with the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has reiterated that the primary focus of this campaign is the well-being of all citizens, ranging from street vendors to the elderly. By combining emergency assistance with improved workplace regulations and enhanced medical preparedness, the Delhi government seeks to ensure that every individual receives the care and support they require during the harsh summer months. With the ‘Garmi Se Jung’ initiative, the administration aims to create a city that remains operational and safe for all residents.

Ultimately, the ‘Garmi Se Jung’ campaign serves as a proactive measure to prevent heat-related complications while promoting public awareness about the importance of hydration and safety. The government’s comprehensive approach not only aims to address immediate needs but also focuses on fostering a healthier and more adaptable urban landscape for the future.
