In a recent statement, Pinarayi Vijayan, the Leader of the Opposition in Kerala, accused both the BJP-led Central government and the state’s ruling UDF of attempting to impose a particular ideological agenda through the PM SHRI scheme. He described this initiative as an effort to incorporate Sangh Parivar ideology into the educational curriculum. Vijayan asserts that this move contradicts the secular ethos that should underpin education in the state.

While addressing a video message, Vijayan noted that the UDF had previously opposed the PM SHRI scheme. He emphasised that the ruling coalition’s change in stance raises concerns about their commitment to secularism. The opposition leader stated, “Those who uphold secularism cannot accept such a move,” highlighting the perceived inconsistency in UDF’s approach towards the scheme.

Vijayan maintained that the previous LDF government in Kerala was prudent by refusing to implement PM SHRI, thereby protecting the integrity of the state’s educational framework. He articulated that the current administration’s endorsement of the scheme represents a departure from earlier values.

Clarification on Memorandum of Understanding

In relation to the controversy surrounding the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the Central government, Vijayan explained that the prior LDF administration had not endorsed the implementation of the PM SHRI scheme through this agreement. He clarified that the MoU was solely intended to facilitate the release of withheld funds that were ordinarily provided for educational purposes.

Vijayan responded to accusations surrounding the MoU by reiterating that signing it did not equate to supporting the controversial scheme. He aimed to clear misconceptions about the nature and intent of the agreement, insisting it was strictly a financial arrangement rather than an endorsement of the programme itself.

He went on to explain that the discourse around the MoU has often been misrepresented and has been a point of contention within the political narrative regarding educational reforms in the state.

Political Implications Ahead of Elections

The PM SHRI scheme has emerged as a contentious issue between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and UDF in the lead-up to the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections. Vijayan accused the UDF of political inconsistency, noting that their strong initial opposition to the PM SHRI scheme had shifted drastically after they assumed power. This inconsistency, according to Vijayan, undermines their credibility and commitment to the values they once espoused.

Vijayan also mentioned that the UDF’s recent acceptance of the PM SHRI scheme seems to contradict their previous stance taken while they were in opposition. The leader’s emphasis on the need to maintain ideological coherency reflects a broader concern about trust in political commitments.

As these developments unfold, the PM SHRI School initiative, a central government programme aimed at establishing more than 14,500 schools across various governance structures, continues to be at the forefront of political debates in Kerala. Stakeholders across the political spectrum are expected to continue examining the implications of this scheme as the assembly elections approach.
