Karnataka will commence the process of recruiting for 74,000 vacant government positions, as stated by state minister Priyank Kharge on August 1. Among these vacancies, 36,774 are set to be filled within the next six months. The announcement comes after a high-level meeting presided over by Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, attended by various cabinet ministers, including Kharge.

Kharge indicated that the recruitment process would kick off immediately following the meeting. He highlighted the importance of accountability among officials to prevent issues similar to those encountered in the NEET examination. He mentioned the implementation of a random question bank system designed to create tamper-proof question papers, along with the installation of jammers in examination rooms to enhance security.

In the conference, Kharge elaborated that District Collectors had received specific guidelines to form surveillance teams, commonly referred to as flying squads. He announced that starting that day, inspections would take place at various test centres to ensure compliance with the new recruitment protocols.

Examination Guidelines and Dress Code Outlined

Additions were made to the existing guidelines regarding what examinees can wear during the recruitment tests. According to Kharge, the Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) has published a comprehensive list detailing acceptable and prohibited items. Attire such as udara, ling, kumkum, and threads worn on the hand are permitted. However, while hijabs are not allowed for candidates, scarves remain acceptable.

Chief Minister Shivakumar convened a meeting on August 1 to assess the preparedness for the upcoming examinations meant for filling the vacant government positions. This preparation falls under the larger objective of efficiently managing the recruitment drive while ensuring transparency and integrity within the process.

The government has also established the Competitive Examinations and Recruitment Reform Committee, which will be led by former Chief Secretary S V Ranganath. The committee includes former chief secretaries T M Vijayabhaskar and Vandita Sharma, along with L K Atheeq, Financial Adviser to the Chief Minister. This initiative aims to streamline the recruitment process significantly.

Political Opposition Calls for Investigation

BJP Karnataka President BY Vijayendra has publicly called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry concerning alleged irregularities in the recruitment processes, particularly within the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC). Addressing a protest organised by KPSC aspirants and job seekers at Freedom Park in Bengaluru, Vijayendra accused the incumbent Congress government of undermining the future of youth by failing to establish a transparent recruitment framework.

Vijayendra further claimed that widespread anomalies in government recruitments have greatly diminished public confidence. He suggested that these irregularities have prevented deserving candidates from securing employment opportunities. The BJP’s vocal criticism of the recruitment processes has accentuated concerns regarding fairness and transparency surrounding the ongoing government initiatives.

In the interim, a written examination for 3,991 Civil Police Constable positions is scheduled for August 2, 2026. This examination will be administered by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) across multiple centres within the state, underscoring the government’s commitment to advancing recruitment efforts in a structured manner.
