Delhi Achieves 33% Reduction in Traffic Congestion in Three Months

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi has reported a nearly one-third decline in traffic congestion at major bottlenecks over the past three months. This improvement follows various enforcement and infrastructure initiatives, as highlighted by officials on Monday. The average congestion length in the city was tracked through Google Maps at regular 15-minute intervals, revealing a drop from 48.25 km recorded between January and March to 32.43 km from April to June 25.

Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has taken an active role in overseeing these anti-congestion measures. He directed the local police to extend the use of artificial intelligence-based traffic management systems. Sandhu recently chaired a review meeting attended by Commissioner of Police Satish Golchha and key traffic police personnel to evaluate the effectiveness of the directives issued following his earlier visit to the Delhi Traffic Police headquarters on April 2.

Officials credited the enhanced presence of traffic police officers on the streets, foot patrolling, and technology-driven enforcement as major factors contributing to this improvement. Month-on-month congestion reductions were noted across 34 of the 62 designated traffic hotspots identified under the citizen-centric initiative, “Project Sangam.”

Significant Improvements Observed in Key Areas

Notable improvements in congestion rates have been reported at various locations in Delhi. For instance, congestion levels at Pushta Road in Kailash Nagar decreased by 82.59 per cent, while Khajuri Chowk experienced a 74.29 per cent reduction. Traffic flow at the Teen Murti roundabout saw an enhancement of 66.01 per cent.

However, it is important to note that congestion worsened at four hotspots due to road construction and other factors. Naraina Flyover observed a minor increase of 1.28 per cent, while congestion at South Extension Part-I rose by 7.55 per cent. Additionally, traffic flow at Max Hospital in Saket deteriorated by 14.93 per cent, and Bhavbhuti Marg faced a staggering increase of 349.87 per cent in congestion. These figures indicate that while some areas have improved, others require urgent attention.

Further assessments revealed that persistent bottlenecks, including Dwarka Mor, Sarai Kale Khan, Mukarba Chowk, and Dabri Gol Chakkar, necessitate immediate infrastructure and operational interventions. The authorities are prioritising these areas for further development to enhance traffic movement.

Future Steps for Traffic Management Improvement

The Lieutenant Governor emphasised the significance of comprehensive joint surveys and regular coordination meetings involving various civic agencies, including the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and the Public Works Department. The aim is to eliminate road encroachments and enhance traffic flow across the city.

During the review meeting, Sandhu underscored the importance of expanding artificial intelligence-based enforcement systems that could facilitate continuous monitoring of traffic violations, leading to improved congestion management. He acknowledged that traffic congestion leads to time wastage and increased fuel consumption, which in turn contributes to elevated pollution levels.

Highlighting the necessity of seamless mobility for Delhi’s global competitiveness, Sandhu assured full administrative support to the Delhi Traffic Police. He intends to personally visit several identified congestion hotspots to assess ongoing changes first-hand. Overall, the review reflected a general improvement at numerous significant congestion points while also identifying areas that still require focused efforts for enhancement.
