Claude Guillemot, the co-founder of the renowned gaming company Ubisoft, tragically lost his life in a plane crash in France. He was 69 years old at the time of the incident. Reports indicate that Guillemot’s private aircraft went down on Friday near La Baule, a seaside resort located in western France. The crash resulted in the death of both individuals on board.

According to French news network ICI, the aircraft involved in the crash was a Cessna 421, a twin-engine propeller plane designed to accommodate eight passengers. The crash occurred shortly before 6 p.m. while the plane was in the process of landing at La Baule’s airport. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the aircraft “bank and crash” moments before it hit the ground.

Ubisoft confirmed Guillemot’s passing in an official statement released on Saturday. A spokesperson conveyed the company’s sorrow, stating, “Ubisoft was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Claude Guillemot, co-founder of the group and chairman of Guillemot Corp., in an accident. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Contribution to the Gaming Industry

Claude Guillemot co-founded Ubisoft in 1986 alongside his four brothers. What began as a modest French gaming company has evolved into one of the leading video game publishers globally. Over the years, Ubisoft has developed and published numerous popular franchises, including Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Prince of Persia, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, and Rayman.

The company’s reputation is built upon creating expansive open-world games that have captivated millions of players around the globe. Under the leadership of the Guillemot family, Ubisoft has maintained its prominence in the gaming landscape, with Claude’s brother, Yves Guillemot, currently serving as the company’s CEO.

The technology and creativity introduced by Guillemot have played a significant role in shaping the modern gaming industry, aiding in the transition from traditional gaming to interactive experiences that engage players on multiple levels.

Legacy of Assassin’s Creed

Among Ubisoft’s many successful franchises, Assassin’s Creed stands out as a major cultural phenomenon. First launched in 2007, the series centres on two rival secret societies throughout various historical periods. The franchise has achieved remarkable success, attracting over 200 million players worldwide.

The most recent significant release, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, debuted in 2025 and immerses players into 16th-century Japan, where they encounter formidable enemies while navigating a web of political intrigue. The franchise’s influence extends beyond gaming, with Ubisoft’s film and television division actively working on adaptations of both Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry.

In addition to his contributions to Ubisoft, Claude Guillemot served as chairman of Guillemot Corporation, a different entity that produces gaming accessories and audio equipment. His impact on the gaming world is expected to be felt for years to come, as he leaves behind a rich legacy within the industry.
