CID Visits Abhishek Banerjee’s Kolkata Residence Again as Investigation Intensifies

The CSR Journal Magazine

A team of four officials from the West Bengal Central Investigation Department (CID) unexpectedly visited the official residence of Abhishek Banerjee, the National General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), on Saturday afternoon. This visit marks the second time in less than a week that law enforcement has arrived at the prominent property located on Harish Mukherjee Road in the Bhabanipore constituency.

On this occasion, Banerjee was reportedly not at home when the officials arrived. In his absence, the CID team engaged in extensive questioning with a close associate of the parliamentarian who was present. Following the inquiry, the team departed without disclosing the specific purpose of their visit.

As of Saturday evening, neither the leadership of the CID nor representatives for Abhishek Banerjee had commented on the nature or results of the team’s investigation. Local sources indicate that the CID’s unanticipated actions have raised questions about the motivations behind the visit.

Kolkata Police Visit Precedes CID’s Arrival

The recent CID visit follows another surprising intervention by a contingent of six to ten personnel from the Kolkata Police at the same residence just four days earlier. During that operation, officers were observed leaving with a computer monitor, fuelling speculation regarding potential dismantling of surveillance equipment located on the premises.

Specifically, it is suspected that the police removed CCTV cameras installed for external security surveillance during Banerjee’s time under the Z+ security category. Notably, this security privilege was revoked by the state government after a recent political reconfiguration in West Bengal.

While Banerjee has not publicly addressed these visits, the political climate has been stirred. Veteran TMC MP Sougata Roy stated that the actions against Banerjee exemplify political vendetta, claiming that raids are being conducted at the residences of several TMC leaders throughout Bengal.

Allegations of Unauthorised Construction Surface

The scrutiny of Abhishek Banerjee has increased in light of a notice he received from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). This notice pertains to alleged unauthorised construction linked to 17 properties held by him, which includes his official residence. The KMC allowed Banerjee a period of seven days to respond to the claims, of which the deadline expired on Monday.

Questions remain regarding the specifics of the allegations against Banerjee. Observers have pointed out the lack of clarity surrounding any factual basis for the charges. Roy, while commenting on the situation, expressed concerns over the justification behind targeting Banerjee without clear evidence.

As events unfold in the political sphere, the actions from law enforcement raise significant dialogue about the utilisation of investigative agencies and their role in the current political landscape in West Bengal. The implications of these visits on Banerjee’s political career and the broader ramifications for the TMC remain uncertain.
