BJP leader Babulal Marandi has accused the Jharkhand government of neglecting student protests regarding alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations. As the Leader of Opposition in the Jharkhand Assembly, Marandi emphasised the need for dialogue rather than avoidance, urging the government to engage with the students who have expressed their concerns through demonstrations.

On August 7, 2026, Marandi joined other opposition MLAs to stage protests on the Assembly premises, which coincided with the second day of the monsoon session. He stated that the government should take students’ grievances seriously and questioned its unwillingness to negotiate with them. His statements reflect a broader dissatisfaction with the state’s handling of recruitment processes.

Marandi claimed that the government is “deliberately adamant,” equating its actions to selling job opportunities and compromising the rights of Jharkhand’s youth. These comments highlight his concern over the perceived commodification of jobs, particularly in light of student protests.

Criticism of Investigating Agencies

Marandi went on to express his belief that state investigative agencies, including the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), are allegedly attempting to obscure the issues at hand instead of pursuing justice. He characterised these agencies as protectors of governmental interests and accused them of shielding individuals implicated in irregularities.

BJP MLA Pradip Prasad supported Marandi’s stance, commenting on the determination of the protesting students. He indicated that demonstrations would persist until their demands are addressed. Prasad praised the students for their prolonged commitment to the protest, stating that the nation could learn from their disciplined and sincere approach to activism.

Prasad further critiqued the authorities for their failure to engage in meaningful conversations with the protesting aspirants. He lamented that the government appears disconnected from the realities of the situation, questioning its legitimacy amid allegations surrounding job sales and the moral integrity of those involved.

Calls for a CBI Inquiry

Nirmal Mahto, a member of the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) and a key opposition figure, has asserted that the Assembly should not function until a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry is initiated. Mahto reinforced the belief that the current investigative bodies are allegedly biased and aligned with the state government.

The turmoil among students emerged following the announcement of results for the 14th Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) Civil Services Preliminary Examination on July 5, 2023. Many candidates have raised concerns about discrepancies in the recruitment process, leading to ongoing protests that include round-the-clock vigils and indefinite sit-ins. Students are demanding greater accountability and transparency from the government.

These protests have not only drawn public attention but have also accentuated the widening rift between the government and aspirants seeking jobs in the public sector. As demands escalate, the pressure on the state government to address these grievances will likely continue, with opposition leaders insisting on accountability and reform in the recruitment process.
