Shashi Tharoor, a Member of Parliament from the Congress party, expressed his welcome of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, emphasising the importance of accountability in a democratic setting. Tharoor’s statements followed Pradhan stepping down from his position amid widespread protests concerning the alleged leak of the NEET-UG 2026 examination. He noted that accountability in a democracy cannot be overlooked indefinitely.

Tharoor also condemned the Centre’s response to the protesters, who were asserting their rights through peaceful demonstrations. He stressed that accountability extends beyond mere resignation and called for necessary reforms and institutional responsibility within the education sector.

In a post shared on X, he pointed out that Pradhan’s resignation reflected an acknowledgment of accountability within democracy. He reiterated that the voices of countless students, parents, and citizens demanding justice could not be dismissed, marking an essential moment in the ongoing calls for reform.

Pradhan’s Resignation and Its Implications

Upon his resignation submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pradhan articulated that he was stepping down in the larger interest of students. He expressed concern about ensuring that the youth of the nation do not fall into confusion regarding their future. Pradhan has a long history with educational issues, having been involved in the sector for over four decades.

In his statement, Pradhan reaffirmed his dedication to fulfilling the aspirations of young people in India, noting that an inclusive and robust educational system is crucial for nation-building. He remarked on his longstanding association with various stakeholders in educational reform and stressed the need for a better framework moving forward.

Recapping the NEET-UG situation, Pradhan indicated that the government had taken immediate actions once irregularities were discovered in the examination conducted on May 3, 2026. He mentioned that the investigation was passed to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), subsequently leading to the examination’s cancellation and setting a new date for a retake.

Student Interests Remain Priority Amid Controversy

Pradhan indicated that the primary concern during this period was to safeguard the interest of over two million students during the re-examination process. He claimed a strong commitment to protecting meritorious students from being adversely affected by the NEET-UG examination controversy, ensuring that their prospects remained unharmed.

The agitation leading up to Pradhan’s resignation extended over a month, featuring protests at Jantar Mantar, led by the Cockroach Janata Party and activist Sonam Wangchuk, who undertook a hunger strike lasting 26 days in response to the examination controversy. The re-examination was conducted on June 21, marking a critical step in addressing student grievances.

The movement gained momentum significantly on July 20, culminating in a ‘Chalo Sansad’ march that faced police intervention. In light of Pradhan’s resignation, Cockroach Janata Party founder Abhijeet Dipke asserted that the outcome showcased the power of persistent peaceful protests against governmental authority, validating their efforts as impactful.
