British PM Praises Reopening of Hormuz, Initiates Maritime Protection Plan with France

The CSR Journal Magazine

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has acknowledged the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as a significant development for international maritime security. In a statement on X, Starmer characterised this event as “good news” and emphasised the importance of establishing a sustainable solution for this strategic waterway. He stated that the proposed arrangement should allow for free navigation without tolls or route restrictions.

Multilateral Approach to Regional Stability

Starmer highlighted a collaborative strategy designed to enhance regional stability, announcing a “joint plan” developed in cooperation with France and other international partners. The aim of this initiative is to safeguard freedom of navigation in this vital energy corridor. The Prime Minister articulated a broader diplomatic vision, noting the immediate necessity for a return to peace in the region, alongside a permanent ceasefire.

These discussions were bolstered during a meeting at the Élysee Palace, where a virtual summit is being organised involving around 40 nations to explore coalition options that ensure the safety of shipping tankers. While the specifics of potential demining operations have not yet been confirmed, the anticipated summit underscores the regional commitment to maritime security.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is also expected to participate and has expressed interest in involving US President Donald Trump in these diplomatic efforts. This inclusion seeks to unify approaches from multiple nations to foster a secure maritime environment in the region.

US Response to the Hormuz Development

In parallel to these European diplomatic efforts, Donald Trump has positively received Iran’s declaration concerning the restoration of maritime access. This reaction follows an announcement from Iran’s foreign minister, indicating that the Islamic Republic will now allow secure vessel transit. The reinstatement of maritime access is conditional upon operators coordinating with Iranian authorities, which comes after a successfully realised ceasefire in Lebanon.

Celebrating this milestone, President Trump took to Truth Social to publicise the reopening, stating prominently, “IRAN HAS JUST ANNOUNCED THAT THE STRAIT OF IRAN IS FULLY OPEN AND READY FOR FULL PASSAGE.” This statement aligns with Tehran’s position that the strait will remain “completely open” during the ongoing cessation of hostilities.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also confirmed that maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz would be fully open in line with the ceasefire. However, he cautioned that restrictions are still applicable, requiring vessels to navigate according to previously announced coordinated routes established by Iranian authorities.

Context of Broader Diplomatic Initiatives

The announcement of the reopening of the strait follows Trump’s declaration regarding a 10-day ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel. This truce is viewed as a vital aspect of more extensive American efforts to negotiate a resolution to the ongoing conflict with Iran. Iran has reportedly maintained that a Lebanese ceasefire is essential for advancing any negotiations.

According to President Trump, the conditions for the ceasefire emerged from successful communications with both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. He announced that an official 10-day ceasefire would commence at 5 PM EST, setting the stage for further discussions.

Furthermore, Trump mentioned the expectation for both leaders to meet at the White House within the next few days, in hopes of solidifying the temporary truce and exploring avenues for lasting peace between their nations.
