On August 5, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reaffirmed the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference’s (JKNC) dedication to reversing the administrative and constitutional amendments that have denied the region its special rights and endangered its unique identity. The announcement coincides with the seventh anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, a pivotal moment that saw the special status of Jammu and Kashmir nullified.

In August 2019, the Indian government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, enacted the repeal of Article 370. This decision led to the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. Abdullah emphasised that the ongoing struggle for reclaiming lost rights remains a priority for his party and its supporters.

Through a post on the social media platform X, Abdullah quoted the American poet Robert Frost, stating, “The woods are lovely, dark, and deep. But I have promises to keep. And miles to go before I sleep.” This reference encapsulates his commitment to the cause and the long journey ahead for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Call for Government to Fulfil Promises

On the same day, former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah urged the central government to honour previously made promises to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He underscored that these assurances are crucial for restoring faith among the local populace and the nation as a whole.

Farooq Abdullah’s remarks highlighted the importance of the government’s commitments, stating that it is vital for the government to not forget the promises made to both the residents of Jammu and Kashmir and their wider audience across India. The emphasis was on accountability and action from the central government regarding its earlier guarantees.

His statements reflect a broader sentiment among political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir, who demand that the region’s unique status and rights be recognised and respected. This ongoing discourse includes calls for a revival of statehood, a critical issue that resonates deeply within the local community.

Reactions to Article 370 Abrogation

Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram characterised the abrogation of Article 370 as a “Constitutional outrage”. He raised concerns regarding the government’s lack of clarity on when it plans to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, stressing the necessity for transparency in this matter.

In his remarks on the anniversary of the decision that bifurcated Jammu and Kashmir, Chidambaram pointed out that a significant legal debate remained unresolved. He referenced the Supreme Court’s reluctance to address the questions raised regarding the validity of transforming a state into two Union Territories. The Court had previously been assured that statehood would be reinstated in due course.

The National Conference has consistently pressed the central government to fulfil its pledge regarding the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, asserting that this commitment was made both in Parliament and before the Supreme Court. The party has maintained that statehood is not merely a political demand, but a fundamental right of the people of the region.
