Bihar’s Vikramshila Setu Bailey Bridge Maybe Fully Operational By November 30

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary conducted an inspection of the newly constructed Bailey bridge on the Vikramshila Setu in Bhagalpur and announced that temporary arrangements would remain until its full operation by November 30. During conversations with journalists, Choudhary emphasised the government’s commitment to facilitating free transport for commuters across both sides of the bridge until it is entirely functional.

Choudhary further confirmed that the temporary operations of the bridge would cater to both private vehicle users and the general public. He expressed that the government was making every effort to ensure transportation arrangements are in place while the final touches are being applied to the bridge’s construction.

Background of Infrastructure Development

The need for this infrastructure development arose after the closure of the Vikramshila Setu, which happened due to a slab collapse earlier in May. This incident caused significant disruption in traffic flow and necessitated immediate measures to solve mobility issues in the region. The bridge serves as a vital link connecting the Purvanchal region to Seemanchal, enhancing connectivity across the Ganga River.

In a conversation with ANI, Vipin Kumar Chand, the Superintending Engineer of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), provided details about the ongoing project. He indicated that, out of three planned Bailey bridges, one has been fully operational while the second is nearing completion with final decking and finishing tasks expected to conclude within a few days. Preparations for launching the third bridge are also in progress.

Chand noted that these bridges are designed as single-lane structures and the administration would determine the types of vehicles permitted to use them. The objective is to restore movement as swiftly as possible, considering the difficulties faced by the public during the closure.

Closure of the Vikramshila Setu

The Vikramshila Setu faced a significant setback on May 3 when a slab collapsed between two supporting pillars, leading to traffic cessation and the need for diversion of routes. Reports suggested that an initial subsidence of a 10-inch expansion joint preceded the collapse, which dramatically affected accessibility in the region.

Since the incident, the bridge has remained closed, prompting local authorities to implement temporary measures and alternative routes. With the construction of the Bailey bridges, authorities aim to alleviate the hardships experienced by commuters and restore efficient connectivity as soon as possible.

The development and management of this project highlight the importance of timely infrastructure repairs, especially in regions reliant on key transport links. The commitment from local administration underscores a proactive approach to addressing logistical challenges posed by unexpected structural failures.
