Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari Warns of Strict Action Over Illegal Construction; Orders Structural and Fire Audits

The CSR Journal Magazine

In the wake of the recent Taratala building collapse, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced a zero-tolerance policy against illegal construction and building plan scams. Addressing a press conference, the Chief Minister urged citizens to report any irregularities in building sanctions directly to law enforcement.

“If there is any corruption regarding building plans, file an FIR immediately. Strict action will be taken,” Adhikari stated, adding that municipal employees involved in such malpractices will not be spared.

Three-Tier Audit Implementation

Following the suspension of all construction activities post-disaster, the state government has mandated a rigorous three-tier audit system for ongoing projects:

Clearance: Projects meeting all safety parameters will receive approval to resume.

Correction: Builders with minor structural discrepancies will be given an opportunity to rectify their blueprints.

Cancellation: Projects with severe, irreparable violations will have their permits permanently revoked.

The government has formed dedicated teams to audit under-construction commercial properties until July 31. Residential renovations are currently excluded from this mandate. Furthermore, a strict three-month deadline has been set to complete comprehensive fire safety audits for all high-rise buildings across the state.

Initially targeting specific zones, the scope of these mandatory audits has now been expanded to include South Dum Dum, Baranagar, and Kamarhati municipalities. Contractors found violating safety norms will face blacklisting.

Rescue Update and Criticism of Former Regime

Providing an update on the Taratala mishap, the Chief Minister noted that rescue operations are nearing completion under the leadership of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). If weather conditions remain favorable, operations are expected to wrap up tonight.

Adhikari also sharply criticized the previous Trinamool Congress administration, labeling the lack of proper disaster management equipment a “matter of shame.” He targeted the corruption allowed during the TMC tenure, promising a thorough cleanup. The Chief Minister assured the public that the state would procure all necessary, modern disaster management apparatus within the next two months to prevent future lapses.
