Bangkok Bar Fire Claims Lives of 33, Including Four Totsakan Band Members

The CSR Journal Magazine

A devastating fire at a music venue in Bangkok has resulted in the deaths of at least 33 individuals, including four members of the Totsakan band, who were performing when the incident occurred. The blaze broke out leading to numerous injuries, with 17 people reported to be in critical condition as families began searching for answers and seeking compensation.

The fire occurred at the Rong Beer Na Ladprao bar, prompting an investigation by Thai authorities into the potential causes. Key areas of scrutiny include whether the venue contained highly flammable soundproofing materials, whether exits were appropriately accessible and unlocked, and the legal registration status of the establishment.

As the tragedy unfolded, the fate of Totsakan, known as the bar’s house band, has dominated media coverage. The band’s emotional toll is highlighted by the family of Preutthipong Pudmon, the deceased keyboardist, who appealed for his legacy to be celebrated through his music rather than the circumstances of his passing.

Survivor Accounts and Band Members’ Experiences

Wiroon Supasingsiripreecha, the chief of the forensic institute, has stated that the majority of victims died due to smoke inhalation, while a smaller number succumbed to burn injuries. Witnesses reported seeing a spark from a circuit breaker that may have ignited the fire, which swiftly spread across the ceiling, plunging the venue into darkness. Patrons described a frantic rush towards the limited exits amidst the confusion.

Within this turmoil, Atipat Wijan, the band’s leader, shared the heartbreaking account of losing his girlfriend and lead singer, Nahatai Sajjalert, who was receiving CPR at the scene but ultimately could not be saved. Ice, as he is known, highlighted that her body showed no signs of burns, making the tragedy even more poignant for him.

Initial confusion regarding the fate of other band members was rife. Keyboardist Preutthipong, who was believed initially to have been rescued, was later confirmed to have perished in the blaze. Drummer Nattapat Thamnita was critically injured and died later in hospital, as did Thitiwat Kaewkanha, another band member, leading to a profound sense of loss for the remaining Totsakan members.

Ongoing Investigation and Aftermath

As investigations continue, survivors and relatives of those who perished have approached local police stations to collect belongings and seek compensation. Many have reported experiencing moments of panic as they fled the inferno. Natthaphong Lakhorn, who was near the stage, recalled initially mistaking the smoke for dry ice, only to realise the catastrophic event that was unfolding.

Survivors have indicated concerns regarding the accessibility of emergency exits. Some, like Natthaphong, managed to escape through doors that witnesses claimed were not usable, underlining the need for a thorough examination of the bar’s safety measures. Families are now advocating for accountability, with a lawyer representing the bar owners proposing an initial compensation of 10,000 baht, approximately $300, to victims and their families, which many believe is insufficient.

Individuals like Kanticha Singkhon, who lost her mother in the fire, expressed frustration at the lack of communication from bar owners regarding compensation, as the families struggle to make funeral arrangements. The ongoing investigation seeks to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident while families are left mourning their tragic losses.
