Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has expressed his appreciation towards Anant Ambani, the Executive Director of Reliance Industries Limited and founder of the Vantara Foundation. His gratitude is directed at the foundation for its specialised wildlife rescue teams and ambulance services that have partnered with the state’s Forest Department. This collaboration aims to address the adverse effects of flooding on both domestic and wild animals.

In a post shared on the social media platform X, Sarma highlighted that the floods in Assam have had significant repercussions on wildlife, stating, “One of the lesser discussed yet deeply distressing consequences of the Assam Floods has been the devastation inflicted on our animals and wildlife.”

The Chief Minister noted the extensive impact of the floods, mentioning that over 10 lakh livestock have been affected. Hundreds of wild animals have reportedly been swept away, while many others are either stranded or missing. He emphasised that despite the Forest Department’s dedicated rescue efforts, the extent of the crisis necessitates additional support.

Vantara Foundation’s Role in Wildlife Recovery

Sarma lauded the Vantara Foundation for its proactive role in aiding animal welfare during such disasters. He mentioned, “I am grateful to the Vantara Foundation for stepping forward by placing its specialised wildlife rescue teams and ambulance fleet under the command of our Forest Department.” The collaboration is seen as crucial in mitigating the consequences of the floods for both livestock and wildlife.

The Chief Minister also stressed the often overlooked significance of animal rescue in natural disasters. He stated, “Animal rescue during natural disasters often does not receive the attention it deserves. We deeply value those who have chosen to stand for this cause.” This statement underscores the importance of raising awareness about animal welfare in times of crisis.

Sarma extended his sincere thanks to Anant Ambani, recognising his charitable initiative as a compassionate gesture amidst the ongoing floods. Such contributions highlight the role that private organisations can play in disaster relief and animal welfare efforts.

Ongoing Flood Situation in Assam

The situation regarding the floods in Assam remains dire, with additional fatalities reported. On Wednesday, six more individuals lost their lives, bringing the total death toll for this monsoon season to 95. The rise in fatalities indicates the severity of the situation as floodwaters continue to affect various districts.

According to the Disaster Reporting and Information Management System (DRIMS), the state is facing widespread rural and critical urban flooding. The latest reports specify that of the recent fatalities, five were connected to the general flood situation, with two fatalities each from Biswanath and Sivasagar districts, and one from Golaghat. Additionally, one individual died due to urban flooding in Morigaon district.

Relief operations within the state government have been intensified, with the establishment of 45 relief camps to accommodate those affected. Currently, these camps are housing 12,356 individuals, showcasing the scale of the humanitarian efforts in response to flooding.
